Foods that will stay with you forever
Poland is located in central Europe, surrounded by 7 other countries, including a little outreach of Russia. The northern shores meet the cold but beautiful Baltic Sea, whilst the south is lined by the Tatra Mountains.
Whilst you will know about its history during World War 2, nothing will prepare you for what you'll find out whilst in the country. Being surrounded by so much beauty but knowing the atrocities that have occurred here leave you with so many emotions. But you have to understand the past to not repeat it.
So, What's Special?
Poland is just one magical place. The scenery is phenomenal across the country: the snow-capped Tatra Mountains are perfect for those who enjoy photography or maybe even a bit of skiing, the towns and cities have some of the most beautiful architecture, and the old town squares have history in abundance.
The Polish food is something we had never really known about or thought of, however once you try the local foods, you'll be craving it forevermore. The selection of cheeses are amazing, with one of the best being the Oscypek.
Our Experience
Greg has been to Poland a couple of times now, on both occasions spending a lot of time in Krakow and Zakopane, with other visits to Wadowice.
We enjoyed taking in the culture as well as the famous flavoured vodka, and delicious cuisine. We also spent time learning the history of the cities and horrors of the past, which included trips to Auschwitz.
Our Advice
Travel around this fantastic country. Whilst it is vast the public transport is so cheap you really have no excuse. Whilst it may not be the best system in the world it's perfectly acceptable and clean.
Nothing in Poland is expensive so our advice is to put yourself out there and try new things. The food as mentioned is brilliant, so eat local. The portion sizes were generally more than adequate which pleases most.
Always give the vodka a try, at the end of the day it's what Poland is famous for. Some of the best vodkas we have had the pleasure of having.
If you are wanting to visit Auschwitz it is best to book on to a tour prior to your trip. Do not worry if you haven't as there are a lot of agents that sell tickets from all the main cities around.
To Summarise...
Considering the history and the way in which Poland was left after World War 2, it is a testament to the amazing Polish people at how this country has developed to what it is now. There really isn't a negative word that can be said about Poland. It's full of culture, respect, beauty and taste, all without costing the earth. The people are brilliant and will assist you whenever they can, the towns and cities are clean and tidy. It really is a pleasure to go to Poland and we cannot urge you enough to give it a go.
