A Harbour Holiday

Welcome to my yearly retreat and the place I spend more time than almost anywhere else in the world. In this blog, I'll walk you through all the best things to do in Padstow, from the finest pasty shops to the enthralling and energetic speed boat rides from the harbour wall.

I've been coming to Padstow for over 30 years, and whilst I'm not there as much as I'd like these days, I still consider myself a part-time local. In my most recent visits to Padstow in July 2022 and July 2023, I took to the seas aboard the Jubilee Queen, hit up just about every eatery going, and shotted my way through the pubs (not my fault that one).

In essence, Padstow is a picturesque harbour town on Cornwall's raw and rugged north coast and remains a firm favourite with the British staycation'ers.

With stunning coastal walks, golden sand beaches and clear waters, you could easily mistake parts of this coastline for the Bahamas, but no, it really is England.

The only catch is that during the school holidays, Padstow is BUSY, and I mean BUSY. So, is it worth it? Come and find out.

Cornish Pasty anyone?

What's Padstow Like?

During the summer, easter and the Christmas holidays, the crowds descend on Padstow like fat kids into a cake sale, and they don't stop coming. They love the cake!

Yet, no matter the time of year, Padstow, Cornwall is alive with the sounds of the lapping sea, the squawking gulls, boat engines, people laughing, chatting and joking and, of course, the loudest man in town shouting, "speedboats, come and ride the speed boats".

The smells are of fresh baking, pasties, fish and chips and that continuous assault of salty sea air. You can almost taste the water as it blows in on the breeze. As you corner the Custom House into the harbour, all these senses crescendo and burst into life.

Ultimately, the small harbour is the beating heart of the town and is flanked on three sides by exquisite boutique shops, old-fashioned English pubs, fish and chip shops and bakeries, making it quintessentially British.

The narrow busy streets run steeply up and down the rugged terrain, so be prepared to put in a bit of effort as you wander the beautiful town, eating that Cornish fudge and ice cream.

Trendy gin bars, art galleries and even a year-round Christmas shop are in town. Padstow is all about image. If you cannot keep up, you won't be asked in.

How to Get To Padstow, Cornwall

Padstow is on the northern coast of Cornwall, in southwest England. Yeah, that little nobbily bit that stretches down below wales and looks like it's trying to escape to warmer climes.

In truth, unless you're flying into Newquay airport, which I doubt you are, you'll arrive in Padstow via a car or bus.

Luckily, direction and travel isn't all that difficult.

From anywhere in the country, aim for Exeter at the crossroads of the M5 and A30.

If your coming from London or anywhere north, use the M4 or M5 to Bristol (an hour north of Exeter) and head south. However, if you're coming from the southeast, take the A303. You can also take the A303 from London. It is as broad as it's long.

Once you arrive in Exeter, take the A30 southwest to the India Queens junction and turn up the A39 through St Columb Major.

As soon as you pass the Cornish Birds of Prey building on the left, take the first turning left to Padstow.

Signs will guide you for the final few miles.

Timing your Trip

How Long Should You Spend In Padstow Cornwall?

To get a feel for Padstow, you'll need to stay at least three nights. Yet, if you want to experience all the best things to do in Padstow, stay for five nights.

That way, you'll have enough time to meet the locals, get out on the water and fish for your dinner. It will give you the time to drink in the pubs, stroll aimlessly around the shops and meet the deer at Prideaux House.

The Best Time Of The Year For Visiting Padstow

Ok, listen up, because this is essential. More so than anywhere else in the UK.

During the high season (the last week of July to the end of August), Padstow is crazy busy. Frankly, I'd avoid that. Aim for the first three weeks of July.

You'll have the summer sun, the peace of winter, and the room to move.

Although, if you want to experience Padstow's infamous Obby Oss, visit Padstow on the first of May. You won't understand a thing, but it's certainly worth it. Similarly, if you don't mind the crowds, Padstow throws a mean Christmas market.

Your call.

Where to Stay Whilst Visiting Padstow

When it comes to accommodation in Padstow, there are three key facts you need to know.

    1. It is going to be expensive, especially in high season.
    2. Book early or you will lose out.
    3. You should stay within a 10 to 15-minute walk of the harbour. Otherwise, it gets a bit of ballache.

I have only ever stayed in one location during my trips to Padstow, and that's on the Foreshore at Dennis Farm.

Why? Because I love camping and being at one with nature. Plus, there's perfect access to the Camel Cycle Trail and the estuary. And to top it off, it's a flat ten-minute walk to the harbour.

Therefore, as always, I want to be honest with you and say I cannot give you the low down on all the specifics of where to stay in Padstow. All I can do is make recommendations as to the best locations.

If you are thinking of somewhere and wanna check my opinion, drop me a DM on Insta, and I'll let you know if it's a good shout.

    Foreshore Dennis Farm

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Camping at Dennis Cove
As far as campsites go, this will take some beating
    • What: Small, no thrills campsite on the Camel Estuary.
    • Where: Only ten minutes down the Camel Trail from Padstow. (map)
    • Why: Frankly, it's a great location, yet peaceful. Plus, the Foreshore has boating access to the sea.
    • Why Not: Considering you're bringing your own food and accommodation, it's a bit pricey. But, all camping in England is!

So, we have a small, flat(ish) field on the camel estuary where you can rock up and set up camp for the foreseeable.

I've known the owners, Harry and Rebecca, for more years than I am willing to share - I cannot be that old. But, my god, they're fantastic.

So what's here? Honestly, there are no mod-cons, no electrical hook-ups, just you, nature and the sound of the lapping seas. It's naturalistic, old-school camping with stunning views.

You can bring your kayaks, paddleboards, speedboats and sailing boats, the lot... Again, Harry is happy to help you get your larger vessels down the slipway and onto the seas.

The toilets, showers and washing-up facilities are always clean and perfectly equipped.

Just kick back with a beer and relax. I'll see you there.

    Dennis Cove Campsite

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Camping
    Welcome to Dennis Cove...
    • What: Small campsite on the edge of Padstow.
    • Where:ย 15-minute walk to Padstow and close to the Camel Trail. (map)
    • Proximityimity to Padstow and sublime views over the Camel Estuary to Rock.
    • Why Not: Simply because I'd stay on the Foreshore.

Again run with the full enthusiasm of my friends Harry and Rebecca, but with a different vibe and more supplies.

Dennis Cove is a family-friendly, safe environment with cracking toilets, lots of room to wash up, and even a couple of pitches with these modern-day hook-ups.

As well as the larger toilet block and more space to wash up,ย  the main draw is the unreal views. The sunrises and sunsets from up here are some of the best in the area.

If the Foreshore is full - this is a great fallback plan. Get up here and take it all in. You won't regret it.

    Further Accommodation

Right, as mentioned, I always stay at the Foreshore.

But, if you have the money and want to stay in the centre of Padstow, you're in luck.

Cute townhouses, hotels and B&B's are all you'll find. Sadly, for those of us backpacking Cornwall on a budget, there are no hostels here in Padstow. Therefore, I am removing Hostelworld from my holy trinity and downgrading to a duo for this blog.

Whilst I have never stayed there, I will shout out an unmissable hotel, and by unmissable, I mean it's bloody massive and overlooks the harbour, oh and it's called Padstow Harbour Hotel. Keep a look out for that one.

But if you want to find your own gaff, check the links below.

Best Things to do In Padstow, Cornwall

Now we've come to the reason you've all landed on this blog, the best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall.

But let's start with the logistics - it won't take long.

Once you're within the harbour, nothing is more than fifteen minutes away. The only thing you need to know is that you'll be walking. There are no buses within the harbour area, and if you saw the roads, you'd understand...

As well as all of my below suggestions, there is a cheeky ferry that picks up at the harbour or the beach and drops you in Rock, where you can enjoy an abundance of coastal walks to the likes of Polzeath. Equally, you could try a spot of waterskiing, wakeboarding or doughnuting.

So, without further ado, let's dive into what there is to do in Padstow, my second home.

A Web Cam on Padstow: The Highlights

Explore the Seas Onboard the Jubilee Queen

Best things to do in Padstow Cornwall - views from the Jubilee Queen
And I thought the lighthouse was meant to stop us getting so close, right?
      • Why: Simple, you get to explore the stunning coastline from the sea and meet some of its inhabitants.
      • Where: From the harbour wall.ย (map)
      • How long: They run twice daily in the summer months, with each adventure lasting around one and a half hours.
      • How much: If you're over fifteen years old, it's a whopping ยฃ17 per person.

Welcome to one and a half hours of pure pleasure aboard the Jubilee Queen, one of the largest ships you'll see in and around Padstow harbour.

You'll be whisked out to sea through the Camel Estuary, passing the old Padstow Lifeboat Station to the left (or for you old sea dogs - port) and the beautiful seaside town of Polzeath to the right (or starboard).

From there, you'll circle the beautiful Puffin Island, which unsurprisingly gets its name from the Puffins who reside there from March to mid-July each year. Depending on the time of year, you may also encounter Basking Sharks, giant sunfish, seals and a vast array of other seabirds.

As you leave Puffin Island, you head out to the stunning Trevose Head Lighthouse, pictured above, and then on into the coves that house the new Padstow Lifeboat Station and endless golden beaches.

Get Wet on A Thrilling Speed Boat Ride

Best things to d in Padstow, Cornwall on the speedboats
Waiting to pass the marker so he can light it up!
      • Why: Umm, Hello, it's a speed boat trip! Don't ask silly questions.
      • Where: In truth, it depends on the tide, but you will hear the guy calling for the speedboat rides. Aim for here - (map)
      • How long: Only fifteen to twenty minutes max.
      • How much: A reasonable ยฃ8.50.

Warning โ€“ you will get wet, but then you expected that, right?

What better way to enjoy fifteen minutes than thunder through the waves onboard a group of small and bloody fast speedboats? Smashing through the oncoming seas onboard the likes of Jaws, Sea Fury and fireball, is easily the best thing you can do in fifteen minutes anywhere in the world, let alone one of the best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall.

Much like the Jubilee Queen, and depending on the time of year, you may encounter some of the wildlife that basks around the sublime shores of Padstow.

Just come and have a go if you think you're hard enough!

Hire Bikes and cycle the Camel Trail

best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - cycle the Camel Trail
      Pick a bike, any bike
      • Why: It's a relaxing way to get back to nature. Plus, you'll have great views and a lot of fun.
      • Where: You can hire from a couple of places in Padstow - I suggest here at Trail Bike Hire (map)
      • How long: Hire bikes for as long as you want. Half day/ whole day. Your Call.
      • How much: Do you want a hybrid, tandem or an original? ยฃ16-ยฃ18 or a tandem for ยฃ32.

I've been cycling the Camel Trail for a couple of decades now, and I love it.

The sea breeze blowing in from the Camel Estuary and the ever-changing landscapes of the old railway line make for picturesque stops as you weave your way as far as Wadebridge or even Bodmin and Wenford Bridge.

Take a packed lunch or stop in a delightful cafe halfway in Wadebridge.

Make of the trail what you will. Go as far as you want. My only advice is to remember to stop and marvel at the surroundings as often as possible.

Above all, it's peaceful bliss on two wheels.

      Paddleboard in the Estuary

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Paddleboarding in the sea
      My happy place.
      • Why: Words such as relaxing, peaceful and fun come to mind.
      • Where: Anywhere you can get your board down to the water. There is no map for this one!
      • How long: However long your heart desires.
      • How much: Free if you already have the board!

In contrast to the other best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall, there isn't much to say here.

After all, most of us now know the lockdown craze of paddleboarding.

Bring your board down, find somewhere to launch it (not in and around the harbour), and off you go.

As the estuary is tidal, and my god, it's a strong tide, I'd suggest checking on the tide times first. Ideally, you can drift downstream on the incoming tide and back to your drop-off point on the outgoing tide, or visa versa.

Although, as long as it's not raining, you'll have a blast.

Learn to Fish with the Emma Kate

      • Why: If you like fishing, want to learn, or are looking for an authentic Padstow experience, this is it.
      • Where: You can book up here (map), and they will point out where to meet the boat.
      • How long: I've always enjoyed a two-hour trip, but you can do longer if you wish.
      • How much: A two-hour tour will cost ยฃ22, whilst a four-hour wreck and reef trip will set you back ยฃ45.

As you may have guessed by now, almost everything in Padstow revolves around the sea.

Originally a two-manned crew, skippered by the fantastic Lee, the Emma Kate is the original fishing vessel, hence the company name Emma Kate.ย However, in recent years this fun and friendly team have grown, and they now have four ships, Emma Kate, Emma Kate 2, Sally Anne and Prue Esther.

That alone shows their popularity, and it's easy to see why.

Jump aboard, and the team will help you from start to finish. Before you know it, you'll be reeling up your lines with mackerel galore.

No matter your standard, or even if you're a first-timer, this is the perfect way to fish during your visit to Padstow.

      Relax at Padstow Beach

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Padstow Beach
      Now, that will do nicely.
      • Why: It's like free therapy and perfect for the mind and soul.
      • Where: Anywhere on the coast, but Padstow Beach is here (map).
      • How long: Until you need to move.
      • How much: Free!

Firstly, I admit, this isn't a photo of Padstow Beach. However, it is Padstow, only two beaches up the coast at Harbour Cove.

Regardless of where this is, there are so many stunning coves and beaches lining Padstow's coast that you could choose a different one for each day of the week and never need to do the same one twice.

On a hot sunny day, you would think you were in Barbados. And that is no lie.

Lower Beach, Hawkers Cove, St Georges Cove and Harbour Cove are all walkable from the town via the sumptuous coast path. Additionally, Trevone, Harlyn and Constantine are three of several pristine beaches that are no more than a twenty-minute drive from the heart of Padstow. Furthermore, they're great for surfing and body boarding too.

Find your spot amid paradise, and lap up the beach vibes with the sand in your toes. You tell me this isn't one of the best things to do in Padstow. I dare you.

Walk the grounds of Prideaux Place

best thinsg to do in Padstow, Cornwall - visit Prideaux Place
I mean, I could live here.
      • Why: There are roaming deer, beautiful gardens and a lovely little cafe to explore.
      • Where: From the harbour walls, it's about a ten-minute walk northwest of Padstow - past the Spar. Although, it's all uphill. (map)
      • How long: Spend a couple of hours enjoying the gardens with a cheeky cream tea afterwards. That should be more than enough.
      • How much: Grounds and gardens are ยฃ3.50, whilst a combined house and gardens will set you back ยฃ8.50.

And most people don't even know it's here...

This gorgeous Elizabethan manor house and sublime gardens are a joy to behold.

Each room is elegantly decorated, with magnificent period features, whilst the gardens are bright, colourful and perfectly pruned. Despite the renovations and new designs, the gardens are typically Elizabethan, with symmetry and hedged pathways running perpendicular to the house at all times.

If you're into your manor houses, history or, like me, you merely enjoy being out in the gardens, you will love Prideaux Place. Furthermore, there is a deer park with hundreds of deer, a delightful cafe and extremely friendly staff.

In reality, the only bit I found hard to believe was that the owners still lived here. Madness!

Where to Eat When Visiting Padstow

I'm going to be throwing many words around now. Words such as traditional, Cornish, English, delicious, scrumptious and mouth-watering.

And you'd better believe I mean every bit of it.ย Then again, I'm a sucker for Cornish delicacies, so you can't blame me.

For those of you who don't know England, Cornwall is home to the pasty, fish and chips, cream teas, fudge and ice cream.

I know, I know, form a queue bitches, I'm first.

No Padstow food blog would be complete without mentioning a man whose name is known to the far-reaching corners of the world, Mr Rick Stein. He now owns so much of Padstow that it's gained the nicknamed Padstein. And that sucks. Whilst I feel it has ruined much of the culinary delights of Padstow, he has done a lot to bring the town into the 21st century and dragged the standard of food to its prime.

However, that's the last you'll see and hear his name in my Padstow blog, for there are much better foods out there.

      Rest A While Tea Garden

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Eat at the Rest A While
When people say great food and fantastic views...
      • What: Cosy back garden with views to die for.
      • Where: Above Hawker's cove, around 40 minutes walk up the coastal path from Padstow. (map)
      • How much: I went for, and recommend, the cream tea - Two scones, jam, cream and a cuppa for ยฃ5.95

This family home come cosy terrace cafรฉ serves an epic treat in their captivating, peaceful and colourful back garden.

The sublime views over the Camel Estuary are matched by the mouth-watering delights from the kitchen. Everything that came out looked and smelt like a dream.

Frankly, whatever you tease your senses with, you will be in for a treat. However, arrive early as the queues grow throughout the day. My advice is to arrive around 11am and order the cream tea. You will not regret it.

Why 11am? They're still warm mwaahhhh!

Fantastic little find this, but the crowds do descend from lunch onwards.

      Craftworks Secret Garden

On of the best things to do in Padstow is to eat at Craftworks Secret Gardens
Show me to my table, I have some seriously good food to eat.
      • What: An outdoor funky burger and fries joint with a twist.
      • Where: Padstow Touring Park and Holiday Village on the outskirts of Padstow.ย (map)
      • How much: Generally, we are talking a tenner for a burger, ยฃ15 for the tacos and ยฃ12 for the burritos.

Whilst this joint is a bit of a walk from Padstow. It is well worth the journey. The crowds tell you I am right. If you want to eat around 7pm, prebook. Otherwise, you might not get a table.

So what are we looking at here? A quirky, fun and exciting take on the classic burger, burritos, taco and dirty fries.

A pair of Indian-style tepees majestically decorated with fairy lights and a nesting swallow (my bird knowledge is a little rusty, but Iโ€™m going with swallow) make up the bulk of the restaurant. However, there are several tables outside too.

Friendly staff make your time in the Secret Garden enjoyable, but it's the food that steals the show. Honestly, this chef needs a TV show. These burgers are banging.

Get yourself up here, and you will never want to leave.

      The Golden Lion

The best things to in Padstow, Cornwall - Eat at the Golden Lion
A dazzling floral display outside, an epic fish pie on the inside.
      • What: Glorious pub grub.
      • Where: In the centre of Padstow.ย (map)
      • How much: Generally, the main courses cost about ยฃ15. But here's a tip, go for Sarah's fish pie - it's a little extra - but worth it.

Not a lot to say really! Great vibes, friendly staff, pleasant surroundings, and always packed out. Yeah, the perfect ingredients for a top-quality pub.

Furthermore, the Golden Lion looks fantastic and serves up some of the best pub food in town. Not only does it taste delicious, but they throw together a significant size portion. None of this - here's a lettuce leaf wrapped in a sauce decorated with a flower and three peas. I am talking a hearty dose of sea-dwelling animals, mash and veggies. Banging!

As mentioned above, if they have any Sarah's fish pie, go for it. It's been a family favourite for years and never disappointed.

      Chip Ahoy

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - A spot of fish and chips at Chip A'hoy
      Delicious!
      • What: Traditional English Chippy!
      • Where: Again in the heart of Padstow.ย (map)
      • How much: Not the cheapest, but what fish and chip shop is in the UK these days? A standard fish and chips will cost ยฃ9.90.

So, I love my fish and chips, and my body shape proves that. I've eaten them around the world, and there's nowhere like Cornwall.

But, another thing you need to know about me is this. I'm a traditional sort-a guy. Therefore, when he who shall not be named took over half of Padstow, he also took over the bulk of the fish and chip shops in town. Then he went and added new styles and a new flavour, and goddam, I hate him for it. In part because it isn't 'proper' fish and chips. Secondly, he added an extra fiver to the price, and lastly, because they're fucking gorgeous.

However, these at Chip Ahoy are better, they are cheaper, they're traditional, and therefore they're my favourite in town.

Sadly, it is currently for sale, and this is the one chip shop he didn't get his hands on - Yet!

I guess what I'm trying to say is yes, you will love he who shan't be named's chips. Try them, please. But if you want traditional and the best, come to Chip Ahoy

      Pasty Time

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Eating pasties
      Get in my belly
      • What: Well, it's all about pasties, so, a pasty.
      • Where: You can find many around Padstow. Yet, three of the best are all next to each other, one street back from the harbour. (map)
      • How much: Put it this way, if your pasty weighed as much as your house, it would cost more. It's around ยฃ7.50 for a Cornish Pasty.

Ahh, another traditional Cornish delight I'veย become accustomed to over the decades.

And again, I think I've eaten enough to call myself an expert in this field too.

      So what is it?

Of course, it's the Cornish pasty.

Here in Padstow, there are many styles, types and places to get the perfect pastry. However, I have narrowed your search down to three pasty shops, and they're all located next door to one another.

In truth, they all serve up the same sorta thing, and having tried most of them, I'm happy to give you my top three locations for the best traditional Cornish pasty in Padstow.

In reverse order: Third place goes to - The Cornish Bakery, second place to The Cornish Pasty Company, and the Far Out winner is, drum roll, please, The Padstow Pasty Company.

Although for the best bread, you need Chough Bakery, just around the corner.

      Caffe Rojano

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall with a pizza at Rojano's
      Ohhhh you sexy beast
      • What: Classic Italian, done the Italian way.
      • Where: Between the Old Ship and the harbour. (map)
      • How much: A good-sized meat pizza costs about ยฃ16-ยฃ18.

Now under the control of Masterchef, Mr Paul Ainsworth, Caffe Rojano has gone from epic to out of this world.

If you're craving pizza, pasta or anything Italian (except an Arancini), this is your only option in Padstow. Don't even try looking because there is no point. Rojano's is the best.

As with Craftworks, I advise booking as Rojano's is only small. But they do say the best things come in small packages.

Everyone is helpful, kind and super friendly to the point it's almost too much. But it all just adds to the charm.

I've eaten Italian food in Italy a lot, and this is the next best thing. I love it here.

      Padstow Farm Shop

One of the best places to eat in Padstow - The Farm Shop
      The freshest tastes of Padstow
      • What: Home-made sausage rolls, fresh meats and veggies. Ice creams and other delicious farm treats.
      • Where: Up the hill, past Prideaux Place, and keep going. (map)
      • How much: By in large, it depends on what you buy. But, it is a farm shop, so expect to pay a tad more than a supermarket.

Farm shops have sprung up around the UK, and sell some of the freshest fruit, veg and meat imaginable...

This is no different! However, I think this may be my favourite.

Their sausage rolls in the small room to the right are divine, not to mention their pasties. The only reason the Farm Shop didn't win the Far Out Padstow Pasty competition - is that it's too far out of town for a sudden hunger urge.

Then there is the fresh meat, the ice creams, the deli, and the selection of Jams, sauces and condiments. Oh, give them to me now.

The best bit is that everything is sourced locally, which is fantastic for the environment, not just us.

Where to Drink Whilst Visiting Padstow

Padstow isn't known for its nightlife or wild parties, but that doesn't mean there aren't places to drink - because there are. Nevertheless, if you are on the hunt for a manic night out, head down the coast to Newquay. That will sort you out.

Furthermore, there are even a few local tipples that you have to try whilst visiting Padstow.

Firstly, Doom Bar, now run by Sharp's Brewery, traditionally made just over the estuary near Rock. Secondly, Cornish Rattler, which is produced near Truro, only twenty-five miles away.

Cornwall is also a leading light within the UK for its gin production, and you'll find countless gin bars and tasting in Padstow.

It's fair to say you will not go thirsty. But my list concentrates on the traditional old Padstow, so buckle up - it's quite a pub crawl.

My only safety advice is don't get too close to the edge of the harbour or think you can swim. It doesn't end well, trust me.

      Shipwrights

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - get a pint down the Shipwrights
Great little place for a cheeky pint of rattler.
      • What:ย Traditional pub serving up traditional beers and ciders. Oh! and a secret garden
      • Where: Right on the harbour. (map)

Time to sit down and relax with a cold pint, and we are starting with my favourite, The Shipwrights.

Come in, put your feet up, grab a cold pint of cornish rattler and watch a bit of sport, or enjoy the shade in the quaint rear garden.

It's always lively, fun and vibey. But, if you grab a table out the front of the pub, you'll have stunning views over the harbour and can sit and watch the world go by.

      The Old Ship

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - Grab a pint at The Old Ship
      Lunch time drinks? Why not?
      • What:ย Hotel restaurant with a busy forecourt.
      • Where: One street back from the harbour between the pasty shops and Rojano's. (map)

In truth, this isn't my favourite place to drink in Padstow, but that doesn't mean it's poor. Because it isn't. After all, it has all the ingredients, there are throws to the good old days, a great atmosphere, and it's perfectly located.

The staff are fantastic and can whip up whatever you ask of them. They certainly know their stuff when it comes to drinks.

Yet, if you only want a good old-fashioned pint and still want to sit outside and watch the crowds pass you by, you can do that too.

      The London Inn

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - A pint of Doom Bar at the London Inn
And the floral award goes too...
      • What:ย A local's pub with a welcoming feel. Not that it used to, oh lord, it used to be rough.
      • Where: Between the harbour and The Golden Lion (map)

If you walked into the London Inn now, you would look around, smile and think, well, isn't this just lovely? And you'd take a seat, relax and just enjoy a quiet alcoholic beverage with some great people.

But, it never used to be.

Not so long back, you'd open the creaking door and see twenty to third old dudes' heads turn and look at you like a gurning competition. Then you'd back out and flit up the road to another pub, thinking you'd just stared death in the face and walked away.

However, as I said, now it's been restored, looks great, is super friendly and well worthy of your business.

      Enjoy it. I did.

      Old Custom House

Best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall - A drink or two with a bit fo sport on the TV
Many a days I've spent staggering around the Old Custom House
      • What:ย Country pub meets restaurant.
      • Where: On the harbour wall. (map)

The largest and most imposing of my suggestions, but again, pefectly welcoming, pleasant and on the harbour.

There is nothing not to like about the Old Custom House.

From its rugged yet stylish exterior to the grandeur of the bar and ample indoor space, I've been stopping off here for a cheeky half, ok ok, I lie a pint for many years.

Yet, despite being the largest, it still holds that charming, cosy and friendly country pub feel.

      Is Visiting Padstow Safe?

Overall, this is a nice easy one to answer.

Yes, all the best things to do in Padstow, Cornwall are perfectly safe, even the speed boat rides. After all, these guys have been doing it for years. They know what they're doing.

Of course, being a harbour town, there are dangers, and they all involve the sea. Wherever there are tides and water, dangers are lurking.

However, if you respect the sea, you will be perfectly safe. By the same token, if you're pissed up, avoid the sea at all costs.

Being drunk or messing about in the sea alone is a fast way to join the Darwin award winners. Other than that, there are no concerns or dangers in Padstow.

      Enjoy it.

Thanks for reading my Padstow blog, and I hope you've enjoyed my guide to Padstow. Clearly, I love the town and want you to see it in the same light as I do.

My last visit was in July 2022, but if something new crops up, or you think I've missed something, please let me know. I'll get my ass back down there and check it out.

Similarly, if you think I'm right or wrong on the food front, especially the pasties, I want to hear from you.

Nevertheless, hopefully, I've given you a good starting point for the best things to do in Padstow, but trust me, there's a lot more out there.

Finally, have a pint at the shipwright for me, unless I'm there, then feel free to join me.
