Discover the Magic of the Mersey

The magic of the Mersey is well documented, as are most famous names who have sailed on it, sang about it or looked out over it.

Liverpool's powerful and colourful past has shaped and sculpted the Liverpool we know and love today. From the mighty docklands, where, once, forty per cent of the world's goods passed, to the notorious gates of Anfield and (before closing) Goodison Park, where some of the most beloved footballers have played, Liverpool is somewhere you absolutely cannot miss.

Nowadays, despite the decline of its maritime dominance, the waterfront and the Three Graces - The Liver Building, The Port of Liverpool Building and The Cunard Building bring in crowds for very different reasons.

Likewise, Liverpool is now scattered with other distinguished cultural names. None more so than a very famous Fab Four... The Beatles. You cannot turn a corner in the city without their statues or names in lights. They are everywhere, trust me...

I've had the delight of visiting Liverpool on a few occasions, and I love the city.

Hence, in this guide to Liverpool, I'll walk you around my favourite places. We'll explore the best the city has to offer, including Royal Albert Dock, getting up close and personal with the Beatles, and showing you the best of Liverpool's restaurants, cocktail bars, pubs, and all the best things to do in Liverpool.

Let's rock'n'roll.

What's Liverpool Like?

Liverpool gives you a feeling you don't get in other cities - a sense of hope and belief. It's a city where everyone's carrying a guitar or busking, longing to be scouted.

You can feel the energy cascade through the everyday person. And, for me, that is what Liverpool is. It's a belief that all your dreams can come true.

The city talks to you in a way no other does. It says if you work hard, try harder and keep putting yourself out there, your dream will happen.

In part, that comes from the stories of those celebrities who have previously walked the cobbled streets. Liverpool is proud of its famous folk and heritage and makes absolutely no apologies for them. In truth, it ramms them down your throat. The city loves a success story, and it shows.

Alongside that sensation, Liverpool is a beautiful, eclectic mix of old and new. The famous cobbled streets and bare brickwork of the waterfront and docklands, exposed to the elements, merge with big, bold, modern shapes and glass-fronted buildings.

Statues and artworks line the streets as music blasts overhead across the city. Music is the beating heart, while the art and statues tell the story of Liverpool.

It's cultural, architectural, and historical, and when those three factors merge, you can't help but live in the buzz of excitement that engulfs the city.

How to Get To Liverpool

Liverpool has one International Airport called Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL). It's located just over seven miles southeast of the city centre on the Mersey River.

However, when it comes to direct flights in and out of the airport, it's limited, covering Europe and a Tunisian flight.

If you are arriving in Liverpool via the airport, the best way to and from the city is via the Arriva 500 bus, which runs every thirty minutes, from 4am to midnight and stops at Liverpool One Bus and Coach station next to Salthouse Docks and the famous Royal Albert Dock.

In truth, due to the lack of direct flights, if you're visiting Liverpool from outside Europe, you might have to fly to another city, such as Manchester, which has more connections.

Nevertheless, if you're visiting Liverpool but already in the UK, you'll have to drive, get a coach or grab the train.

If you opt for the coach, several companies stop in Liverpool from major cities around mainland UK. In my opinion, two of the best are National Express and FlixBus. Both of these also terminate at Liverpool One Bus and Coach Station.

From there, you can easily walk to almost any central location, the best things to do in Liverpool or your accommodation.

If you plunge for the train, you will arrive at Lime Street Station, a brief twenty-minute walk northeast of Albert Docks. Again, this is a fairly central location within Liverpool. However, if you don't want to walk, the underground links Lime Street to Liverpool Central, James Street and Moorfields.

Timing your Trip

How Long Should You Spend Exploring Liverpool?

I would suggest four whole days in Liverpool is the perfect amount of time to understand the city, yet not rush through it.

After all, you don't want to miss a drink in the Cavern Club or stroll around the historic Royal Albert Dock.

There's a lot of history to uncover, museums and galleries to explore and great places to eat, not to mention wild nights out across the city.

Take your time and enjoy it.

The Best Time Of The Year For Discovering The Best Things to do in Liverpool

As with most of the UK, the best things to do in Liverpool are better done in the summer. However, you will do well to avoid the school holidays, as the city can get busy. These typically run in Liverpool between the 20th of July and the 1st of September.

Therefore, I would aim to visit Liverpool in June, the first three weeks of July or when the schools return in September.

That way, you should avoid the crowds and benefit from the best of the infamous British weather.

Where to Stay Whilst Visiting Liverpool

Whilst there are sprawling suburbs that roll across the Mersey and inland to the likes of St Helens, Liverpool isn't a massive city and only has a population of nearly a million.

Nonetheless, the Liverpool that most tourists explore is even smaller.

Often, it is centralised around the small area on the eastern bank of the Mersey from the Liver Building down to Queens Docks, an area called the Waterfront. The more touristy area of Liverpool further includes The Baltic Triangle, The Georgian Quarter, Ropewalks, and The Knowledge Quarter.

It is within these areas that you should be looking to stay. Hence, the best places to stay in Liverpool are around the world-famous docks and within the Cavern Quarter.

Even though it isn't a large city, it is one of the most-loved in the UK. Therefore, it is geared for as many tourists as will arrive, so don't stress about not finding accommodation. You will.

Likewise, Liverpool caters for all tastes, expectations, styles and budgets. Everything from Couchsurfing to the five-star luxury hostels can be found here.

Despite the differing styles and standards of accommodation, all of my suggestions are within these areas and offer great value for money.

So, without further ado, let's dive into them.

YHA Liverpool Albert Docks

The best things to do in Liverpool - YHA Liverpool Albert Dock Hostel
  • What: Fun and friendly youth hostel.
  • Where: Overlooking Wapping South Dock and less than a ten-minute walk to Royal Albert Dock. (map)
  • Why: It's well located, friendly, has fantastic facilities and is great value for money.
  • Why Not: From the outside, it looks like a prison. However, it means it's secure.

Where to start?

First impressions aren't going to be great.

The place has a ring of steel running around the grounds and carpark, which makes Alcatraz look like an open prison.

Nevertheless, once inside, things change dramatically. It's open, spacious, artsy and warming.

Welcoming staff make for a pleasant stay, whilst the intriguing and bold artworks keep the stay interesting. I love it.

The dorms are large, airy and clean, and you can't ask for anything more.

When you add in the facilities and perfect location, you have to consider staying here when you come to explore the best things to do in Liverpool.

In April 2026, beds in a spacious dorm start at £18 a night. Bargain! Private dorms for small groups are also available.

Ibis Liverpool Centre Albert Dock

The best things to do in Liverpool - Ibis Liverpool Centre
Cheap and not so cheerful
  • What: Standard budget hotel.
  • Where: Overlooking Salthouse Dock and the world-famous Albert Dock. (map)
  • Why: It's all about the location. Plus, there's cheap on-site parking, and the staff are super friendly.
  • Why Not: Honestly, there are better levels of comfort and style out there, pssst... including my third option below.

Ok, so let's start with this.... The Ibis Liverpool Centre's success comes solely from its location. Like a few other places, if it were anywhere else, I'm not sure I'd mention it.

So, luckily for it, it is perfectly located with views over the docks and within a few steps of Liverpool's One Bus and Coach Station. Furthermore, it has secure, on-site parking for £11 for a twenty-four-hour period, which in a major UK city is fantastic.

More good news comes in the form of fantastic staff throughout, from the receptionists to the cleaners, everyone was helpful, kind and warming.

However, when it comes to the room, even though they were clean, fantastic shower, and an ok size, everything screamed budget and drab, not to mention the bed, in our room anyway, was rock solid. It felt like I was sleeping on a stone in the morgue.

Would I stay here again? Yeah! I would, but truth be told, if the hotel below were available, I'd stay there.

In April 2026, I paid £338.05 for three nights (weekend prices) for two people.

That's how close you are to the docks

ibis Styles, Liverpool

The best things to do in Liverpool - Ibis Styles
  • What: Budget hotel with a classy feel.
  • Where: On Dale Street, only a 10-minute walk from the Liver Building. (map)
  • Why: Because it's super comfy, clean, and great value for money, as well as close to all the best things to do in Liverpool.
  • Why Not: Because you want views of the river... I don't actually have a good reason other than the YHA is cheaper.

The main pros I found with the hotel are that it is friendly, clean and well-located.

Yet there's so much more. It's got all the facilities if you want to cook for yourself and a twenty-four-seven front desk with staff who can't do enough for you.

Plus, it's stupidly quiet. My room overlooked the main road below, and honestly, the only sound I heard was the occasional siren whizzing by. Even that was faint.

The room came complete with a selection of teas, coffee, toiletries, a hair dryer, an iron and an ironing board, and again, they were exceptionally clean, tidy and comfy.

If I'm with someone when I next visit Liverpool, I'd stay here.

In January 2024, I paid £252 for four nights for two people.

A very warming entrance to the Ibis Styles.

Further Accommodation

With the vast choice of accommodation in Liverpool, it will be easy to find, even at the last minute, especially out of season (January to March).

However, there are two massive football clubs in Liverpool. Therefore, if either of them is playing at home, accommodation gets snapped up quickly, especially if it's Liverpool.

Check the fixture lists and try to work around them. Similarly, weekends get busy, and prices rise, so for a more cost-effective stay, try visiting on a weeknight.

As of June 2026, Liverpool is introducing a small city tax, which equates to a small percentage of your stay.

As always, if you don't like my suggestions on where to stay, the three links below should have you covered.

How many Superlambanana's can you find?

As mentioned above, Liverpool is a small city, which means everything is walkable.

If you're unable to walk or require a wheelchair, parts of the city are likely to be uncomfortable. Most of the streets are uneven or cobbled and, when wet, are very slippery.

There's a really good metro/underground that runs both underground and overground. You can buy day tickets for less than a fiver too. Therefore, this might be worth looking into.

Again, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Based on my many excursions, below is my comprehensive list of the best things to do in Liverpool.

If you find anything I've missed that you think should be here, drop me a DM on Instagram or throw me a comment at the bottom of the blog. I will come back and take a look.

Enjoy!

Discovering Liverpool: The Highlights

Join the Fab Four at The Beatles Story

The best things to do in Liverpool - The Beatles Story
A colourful start to the Beatles Story.
  • Why: The Beatles are the greatest thing to come out of Liverpool. No trip to Liverpool is complete without visiting their story.
  • Where: Under the Royal Albert Dock and next to the Wheel of Liverpool. (map)
  • How long: Give yourself an hour and a half to two hours to properly explore the history.
  • How much: Entrance for adults (sixteen plus) is £19, concessions start at around £15 - book here.

As we know, The Beatles are Liverpool, and Liverpool is the Beatles. One doesn't exist without the other.

However, I'll hold my hands up and admit - I'm not a Beatles fan.

Yes, they're good, but they're just not for me.

So, when I tell you that I found the Beatles Story seriously fascinating and that the following morning, I was still discussing some of the information I'd learnt. You know it's a worthwhile tour.

You're given a headset, which you use throughout the Beatles Story. All you have to do is click the corresponding number on the headset to the number you see on the wall.

There, you're told about all the events, stories and issues within that time frame, location or about that item(s). The numbers get a little lost towards the end, and you can easily listen to some information before you should.

Nevertheless, it's colourful, captivating and informative, hearing from those involved and those closest to them.

Whilst this tour is one of many Beatles tours, it is a must when exploring the best things to do in Liverpool.

Explore Royal Albert Dock

Best things to do in Liverpool - Albert Dock at night
Night time in Albert Docks, Liverpool
  • Why: Easy. It's iconic, beautiful and historical. Plus, there's loads to see and do.
  • Where: On the waterfront south of the Museum of Liverpool and north of the Wheel of Liverpool. (map)
  • How long: Grab a cuppa and cake, do the Beatles Story or on a warm day, a cheeky pint. How long do you need?
  • How much: As things should be, walking around is free. The pint, on the other hand, will cost ya.

Royal Albert Dock is the place to be. In truth, it's the epicentre of Liverpool.

Everything is here, including the Beatles Story, boat trips, museums and galleries, shops, cafes, bars, pubs and Restaurants. I think that covers everything.

However, the pièce de résistance is the way the Royal Albert Dock looks. Stunning cast-iron and brick warehouses encircle and hang over the shimmering waters. Vast red pillars rise from the narrow cobbled streets into the simple yet stylish brick buildings that once housed goods from around the world. Once upon a time, this was the hub of world trade.

Tables, chairs and signage spread across the little space left as the chatter and laughter spill from the walkways, bars and cafes. There is an excitement in the air, and you will get caught up in it.

Yet, the best time to visit Royal Albert Dock is at night, as the buildings and pillars light up. Get yourself a beer and sit in awe as the docks transform. Magic.

The famous docks just can't be beaten.

Visit Liverpool Cathedral

The best things to do in Liverpool - Liverpool Cathedral
When they wanted it big, the builders didn't mess about!
  • Why: To see its sheer size. Also, who doesn't love a Cathedral tower climb with stunning views?
  • Where: East of the Baltic Triangle on St James Mount, just off Chinatown. (map)
  • How long: Including a fifteen-minute walk each way from Liverpool One and the shops, you'll need just over an hour.
  • How much: As Cathedrals should be, it's free, but they would like a donation, and boy, do they make that clear.

Firstly, I would like to mention that Liverpool has two Cathedrals: Liverpool Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral - Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

Whilst both were completed roughly the same time, the 1960s and 1970s, they are vastly different. If cathedrals are your thing, then explore both.

If you only have time for one, I'd suggest the older-looking Liverpool Cathedral (pictured above).

For me, the Metropolitan Cathedral was a bit modern. Similarly, I wasn't keen on its style, look and vibe. Nevertheless, they did have great artwork and sculptures inside and out. Also, they charge £5 per person to visit the crypt, and there wasn't much to see.

Back to the more traditional-looking Gothic-style cathedral, the first thing that hits you is its sheer size. The building is over 188 meters long, with the tower peaking at just over 100 meters high.

The main entrance makes you feel like an ant in a field of trees. Inside, the numerous arches, stained-glass windows, and every square inch are breathtaking and nothing short of a miracle.

My personal highlight was the views from the top of the tower, costing £8 to climb. I say climb, the two lifts did all but 108 of the steps. From the top, the views are sensational.

Furthermore, there's plenty of staff happy to talk and answer any questions you might have, as well as a shop, cafe and toilets.

Overall, it's one of the most sociable cathedrals I've ever visited.

Learn about the city's history at one of Liverpool's Museums

The best things to do in Liverpool - Liverpool Maritime Museum
With links to so many maritime stories, you have to visit this one.
  • Why: You will understand the history of Liverpool and its people far more if you visit at least one museum.
  • Where: They are dotted across the city. A few are based around Albert Dock, including the Maritime Museum. (map)
  • How long: An hour at each museum is usually enough.
  • How much: Several of Liverpool's museums are free. Others charge between £5 and £20.

Ok, so this one is a little tricky to write up.

Why?

Well, firstly, the museums are scattered across the city. Secondly, some charge, others don't. Finally, some are genuinely interesting, others aren't.

It truly depends on what floats your boat or how much, if anything, you're willing to pay to see something.

That said, here are a few thoughts that might twist your arm one way or another.

Museum of Liverpool - Free. Takes a look at all things Liverpool-based, from prehistoric to modern-day living, including the animals past and present, and how the landscape has changed, the docks, the World Wars, celebrities, the rise of LGBTQ+, women's rights, sports and more.

Maritime Museum - Free. Examines everything and anything to do with the history of Liverpool's docks, the people who built them and links to ships that became synonymous with Liverpool.

Slavery Museum - Free. Details the despicable world of slavery in the form of stories, art, artefacts and pictures and the links Liverpool had with slavery.

World Museum - Free. There are many displays in this epic building, including history, nature and natural history, science over the ages and the world of culture and how it has sculpted Liverpool.

Interesting place to explore Liverpools past and its celebrities.

Take a Trip on the Mersey

The best things to do in Liverpool - Take a trip on the Mersey
The Dazzle Ferry. More colourful than the music.
  • Why: If the weather is good, it's a great way to spend fifty minutes on the Mersey.
  • Where: Pick up and drop off at the Gerry Marsden Mersey Ferries Terminal. (map)
  • How long: This trip takes fifty minutes, but other shorter trips are available elsewhere.
  • How much: A reasonable £14 per adult and £9 for kids aged 5 to 15. Book here.

I have to be honest... I did this trip around the Mersey on my first trip to Liverpool and haven't done it since.

Things may have changed... However, I doubt it.

Two ships carry excitable passengers up and down the Mersey, namely the colourful Dazzel (pictured above) and the Royal Daffodil.

From the deck, you'll have views of the Wirral and Liverpool. The boats stop on both sides of the river. Should you wish, you can get off and explore the area, then catch the later cruise home.

Throughout the trip, you hear the history of Liverpool and listen to what felt like an endless version of Gerry Marsden and the Pacemakers' 1965 classic - Ferry Cross the Mersey. I swear it's on repeat. The captain must have earplugs in. It's insufferable.

Other than that endless racket, the trip is informative, fun, and, if you get lucky with the weather, a perfect way to enjoy one of the best things to do in Liverpool.

Where the action starts and finishes.

Enter the Premier League at Anfield or Goodison Park

Best things to do in Liverpool - Watch the reds at Anfield
It was this lot or the Toffees and I went with the Reds -Sorry Everton.
  • Why: To watch one of the most successful club teams ever to have graced the game of Football, or Everton.
  • Where: Anfield and Goodison Park are a short bus ride northeast of Liverpool centre, near Stanley Park and Gardens. (map) The Hill Dickinson Stadium is a thirty-five-minute walk north of Albert Dock on the coast.
  • How long: Give yourself half a day plus whatever time VAR adds.
  • How much: It depends on who you see and where you sit. For a complete price list, click here: Liverpool or Everton.

I won't bore you to death about this one. It's a footy (soccer for those across the pond) match.

You know what happens here. Two people stand in two nets and try to stop a round ball going in them, whilst twenty others kick it one way or the other and try to get the ball in said nets.

You either wanna watch a game... or you don't.

If you do, and you can get tickets, do it. You will not regret it. However, if you don't, skip this one and move on.

Out of the two, I've only seen a game at Anfield, weirdly, against Everton, but the atmosphere was insane, as were the pre-match pints and party scenes after.

All stadiums also offer tours, should you wish to go backstage and learn more about the clubs and their stadiums.

Ride the Wheel of Liverpool

The best things to do in Liverpool - Wheel of Liverpool
Let's be having you Wheel of Liverpool
  • Why: I think it offers some of the best views in Liverpool.
  • Where: Just south of Royal Albert Dock near the Beatles Story. (map)
  • How long: Once onboard, it only takes roughly ten to fifteen minutes.
  • How much: A little steep for what you get, but £13 per adult, and children are £10. Best to pre-book - Book here.

Again, I don't think I need to talk you through this one too much.

Basically, the short version is that you jump in a six-person capsule, get flung around, shout out oooo and aaahhhh to sublime views and come back down.

There isn't a longer version...

Having been on the London Eye, I and I'm sure you will too, expected something similar.  After all, they are very similar looking.

However, where the London Eye takes a once-around slow trip, the Liverpool Wheel felt more like a Ferris wheel at a theme park. It went around a lot quicker than I had expected, and around five or six times.

I think I know why. In January 2024, there were only five people (including us) on it. Therefore, we didn't have to stop and wait for people to get on and off. However, I imagine if you're here in the high season, you might only go around once. Only... slower.

Visit the Cavern Club - Home of the Beatles

The best things to do in Liverpool - Beatles tribute band and drinks at the Cavern Club.
The Beatles tribute in full swing.
  • Why: It's as close as you'll get to where the Beatles are said to have started. Plus, there's always live music.
  • Where: On the busy, loud and proud Matthew Street. Near a statue of our Cilla. (map)
  • How long: A few hours. It depends on the band and how much dancing you can muster.
  • How much: Entry is £6, day or night. Once inside, the drink prices range, but none are horrific.

Ok, I know, I did the tour.

This isn't where the Beatles first got together. That accolade goes to the Casbah, The Beatles' "Personal Club". And yes, there is a little confusion over whether this is the original site of the Cavern, but for me, it will do.

Anyway, once you come to terms with that, it's a truly remarkable little underground brick cave. It has been home to the Beatles and a location for numerous other famous singers, such as Adel, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and many, many more.

It's a pretty big deal.

Once inside, you can sense what it must have been like during Beatlemania in the 60s.

Loud, bone-shaking, cramped, hot and sweaty, but none of that matters... It's the Cavern Club, Liverpool. It's part of that 'anyone can make it' dream I mentioned earlier.

I've seen numerous different groups, but I highly recommend a young Beatles tribute band called Beatles Complete.

Have a laugh at Hot Water Comedy Club

The best things to do in Liverpool - Hot water comedy club
Getting the crowd going
  • Why: Because it is hilarious. Plus, it's also full of inappropriate Jokes! Keep up the epic work, Hot Water.
  • Where: In an industrial area north of the city centre, around ten minutes north of the SuperLambanana. (map)
  • How long: On average, shows last just under two hours, but why not grab some food and drinks in the food hall?
  • How much: A typical evening gig costs £18 per person. However, there are free shows during the day. Book here.

If you don't like inappropriate or 'risky' jokes, this isn't for you... But, hey, that says more about you than them.

Hot Water Comedy Club is set within a wonderful food market hall with numerous food stalls, a bar and quirky decor. All of which is perfect for a pre-show pint or a bite to eat.

Often, there are numerous shows a day, and some are free.

Usually on a Saturday and Sunday, you'll find two free gigs at 1pm and 4pm. Typically, they last around an hour and a half, with two half-hour slots and an MC.

Often an evening headline show charges, but having been to that too, it's worth every penny. The free shows are just a big fat juicy bonus.

All in all, I think it's great value for money and a right good laugh. Plus, the whole venue and vibe are spot on.

For me, the only downside was that the breaks were too long. It gave too much time for the laughter to die back.

Where to Eat in Liverpool, England

As many people know, I am a massive foodie, so this could be slightly biased, but you're in for a treat. Some of the best things to do in Liverpool revolve around food.

Owing to its past as the hub of world trade, Liverpool has always been affiliated with foods from around the world. Nowadays, these foods can be found across the city, and boy, they're good.

Yet, there's more. Not only have foods from all four corners of the globe arrived on Liverpool's shores, but along the way, they have been infused with other great dishes, making Liverpool a unique array of flavours.

As always, I like to mention local dishes or specialities linked to the area, so here's one to try in Liverpool... Scouse.

Scouse is a vegetable stew with a side of bread, used mainly as a comfort food to help people through the cold winters.

Below, I'll talk you through some of the best food I've had in the UK whilst trying not to drawl and contain my excitement. Look at me multitasking.

Given that there are so many delicious food joints out there, I have broken things down into sections: Markets, Bakeries, Breakfast and Brunch and Main Meals.

Ready for the best places to eat in Liverpool? I thought so, let's go.

Enjoy the Best Food Market in Liverpool

Baltic Market

Best Things To Do In Liverpool 65
  • What: A vibrant, colourful indoor food and drink market (Veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: South of the city centre and a short five or six-minute walk southwest of Liverpool Cathedral. (map)
  • How much: That depends on what you buy and how hungry you are... (menu)

With numerous stalls serving up tantalising smells and authentic tastes from around the world, Baltic Food Market has to be Liverpool's best food market.

From Nashville to Thailand and everything in between, this fun and friendly environment is a great place to gather with friends, try different flavours, and wash them all down with a refreshing beverage.

I can highly recommend the burritos and the pizza, but truthfully, everything looked fantastic.

Simply scan the barcode on the tables, check the menus and take in the bold, lively atmosphere of this foodies paradise.

As if things couldn't get any better, there is cheap parking next door on Grafton Street.

Best Bakery in Liverpool

Rough Hand Made

The best things to do in Liverpool - Try the Dulce de Leche at Rough Hand Made
Just give me a minute whilst I re-live this moment.
  • What: A bakery serving up fresh-baked goods, including epic croissants, cakes and sandwiches, as well as fresh jams and sauces. (Limited vegan options)
  • Where: Cosied up in the corner of Royal Albert Dock. (map)
  • How much: Two cups of tea and two croissants cost around £11. You cannot do anything better with £11, trust me. (menu)

Tucked away in the corner of Royal Albert Dock, this Argentinian master bakery will thrill and excite even the dullest palettes. Everything they make has been crafted from their personal experiences.

Additionally, unlike many bakeries, you can watch the beautiful, handmade delights getting prepared before your very eyes. All the ingredients are fresh and full of raw, natural flavours, and it shows.

Rough Hand Made specialise in extraordinary croissants, the pinnacle of which is the magnificent, sweet and tasty Dulce de Leche. Nothing else has ever come close.

Ultimately, this is what you need to try. It is, by far, the best croissant I can remember eating... Ever!

Other options include outstanding fresh jams, sauces and walnut bread. I had their pesto sandwich, and again, wow, simply delicious.

Now I come here every time I visit Liverpool. The only issue is they're so good, they do sell out, and on weekends, that could be as early as midday. Get in early.

Breakfast and Brunch

Brunch and Cocktail Club

The best things to do in Liverpool - Brunch and Cocktail Club
  • What: A fancy, romantic and relaxing restaurant bringing the outside in. (Veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: On Duke Street, just up the road from John Lewis. (map)
  • How much: Two mugs of tea, two full English (one vegan) and two smoothies cost £57.48. (menu)

Walking in, you could be forgiven for thinking you had entered the orangery of a National Trust house. Yes, they're fake plants, but honestly, it was so well done, it felt expensive and posh, and whilst the most expensive brunch on this blog, it felt great value.

From the minute you walk in, there's a calming aura that surrounds you, which lasts the entirety of your stay.

Despite the delightful foiliage and superb, friendly service, the food, as it should be, is still the best thing about Brunch & Cocktail Club. Having had an average breakfast the day before, we were so pleased to find flavour in every bite. Nothing felt like it was bought at a supermarket, only butchers and green grocers, and that's the key to any fresh brunch.

Genuinely, it's a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and I'd highly recommend a visit and that fry-up.

Great vibes

Peaberry Coffee House and Kitchen

The best things to do in Liverpool - Peaberry Coffee and Kitchen
Get in my belly. Those eggs, mmmmm.
  • What: Chilled cafe selling delicious breakfasts and healthy brunches. (Veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: Also on Royal Albert Dock near the Beatles Story. (map)
  • How much: Two mugs of tea, one full English and one full vegan breakfast cost £36.85. (menu)

This wonderful little place on Royal Albert Dock is always busy, and there's a reason for that. The food is delicious, as are the staff and the atmosphere.

The style is simple yet effective, with Liverpool's exposed brickwork, natural materials, leafy-green plants and colourful, fun artwork. Peaberry has nailed it.

In the same fashion, the chilled traveller's playlist, which smoothly caresses and massages you into your chair, is simply divine. Bangers from Moby, Dido, Alanis Morissette and the classic Drops of Jupiter from Train all have you more at one than a Yoga retreat in Ubud.

Together with the fantastic staff, the fresh ingredients and tasty food round off a perfect brunch, making Peaberry somewhere you'll want to return time after time.

As colourful and fun as the food.

Brunchin'

The best things to do in Liverpool - Breakfast at Brunchin'
Now thats a proper brekkie.
  • What: Snazzy and fresh breakfast and brunch restaurant. (veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: On Richmond Street near the base of the Radio City Tower. (map)
  • How much: Again, two mugs of tea and two brekkies came to £29. And that's super cheap for what we had. (menu)

Firstly, this is not the most straightforward restaurant to locate, as can be told by the number of people who, like us, were looking and trying a few doors.

The Brunchin' sign overhangs several little places, but once we found the small door leading up some stairs to the left of the other cafes, we were in heaven.

Another leafy jungle paradise awaited, with, in my opinion, a slightly better breakfast, even if it was louder and less chilled.

Despite being louder, it once again had great vibes with exposed brickwork and greenery, set amid what looked like an old minimalist factory, with exposed iron beams and pipework on display. Fantastic.

Without sounding like I'm repeating myself, the breakfast was fresh, clean, tasty and not greasy, which is a winner. It was cooked to perfection.

Take me back.

Moose

The best things to do in Liverpool - Brunch at Moose
The beast - the Kaepernick
  • What: A North American masterclass in breakfast and brunch. (veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: On Dale Street next to the Town Hall. (map)
  • How much: The above shown breakfast and English tea will set you back £17.95. (menu)

Firstly, you will have to book this place; it gets busy, and there are two perfectly good reasons for that. It's small and bloody tasty.

Whilst slightly tight for space, the vast team at Moose manages to wing their way to your table within seconds of you even thinking you need something. Honestly, there are as many staff as there are customers. No matter how busy they are, there will be someone free to assist at all times, without being overbearing or making you feel rushed.

As for the menu, wow, there was a blend of delicious syrups, pancakes, waffles, toasts, eggs, porridge and sandwiches. Everything that came from the kitchen was a piece of pure artwork for the eyes and nose.

I went for and can highly recommend the Kaepernick, a great fusion of the comforting full English and a smooth, stylish Canadian staple.

Why choose syrup and pancakes or a full English when you can have both on one plate?

Book and thank me in the comments at the bottom of the log for this recommendation.

Main Meals

Chamber 36

The best things to do in Liverpool - The best food in Liverpool - Chamber 36
Hands down, the best food I've eaten...
  • What: The best Asian food I've eaten outside of Asia. (Veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: A short walk from Liverpool Cathedral on the crossroads of Duke St, Upper Duke St and the A5038. (map)
  • How much: We had a couple of cocktails, beers and a main each and shared three sides. Overall, a respectable £72.60. (menu)

Personally, I think you need a couple of mains and a side... minimum!

So let's talk about the crispy shredded beef and the noodles.

Both of these dishes work together like Ronnie and Reggie, Torvill and Dean. You can't have one without the other. Then throw in a side dish, and heaven awaits. The flavours and textures are unbeatable.

I must have had a better meal somewhere in Asia, I just can't remember it right now...

Whilst those were the stand-out dishes, I want to be clear - all the others I've tried were phenomenal too. The long-stem broccoli was crispy and flavourful, whilst the chicken bites melted in my mouth with fantastic flavours.

Truthfully, I thought the decor and the ambience were on point. I simply cannot remember them enough to describe them, as I had my head and heart firmly in the food.

If you only have one night in Liverpool, you have to eat here.

Similarly, the cocktails were tasty, and the staff were super attentive and helpful.

Stylish, but nothing compared to the food.

Salt House Tapas

The best things to do in Liverpool - Salt House Tapas
That Ox cheek... Naughty.
  • What: An extraordinarily cool twist on Tapas, adding a more modern style to their menu. (veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: On Hanover Street, opposite John Lewis and a few meters from Liverpool One. (map)
  • How much: Two of us had a couple of beers, a main each and shared three dishes. Total price - £71.50, which is about right. (menu)

Mix the tapas of Spain with a hint of South America, and you'll be close to where Salt House Tapas is aiming for.

With a quirky menu full of delicious small plates, you can't help but dive in.

My favourite was the ox cheek, which I've never had before. Safe to say, I'll be having it again. It melted as the fork neared my mouth.

Pure filth on a plate, but the best kind of filth. Additionally, there are fantastic options for veggies and vegans.

Not only was each plate full of goodness, but so was the restaurant. We had the friendliest, happiest waiter I have ever had the pleasure of being served by. He couldn't do enough for us, which made the whole experience even better. Ps... Thanks for the ox tail recommendation. Banging.

A magical twist on Tapas

Mowgli Street Food

The best things to do in Liverpool - Mowglis Street Food
Not my idea of attractive plates, but the food was that good, it didn't matter.
  • What: Another insane take on Asian street food. (Veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: On Water Street, just back from the Liver Building. (map)
  • How much: In total, our bill came to £91.67. We had a couple of cocktails and a main each and shared two sides. (menu)

This is the first of what is now an empire across the UK.

The award-winning TV chef Nisha Katona MBE has created a successful empire with her sublime, tasty dishes from across Asia. This Mowgli's restaurant was her first, and it still has to be one of the best-looking.

However, for what you get, I think it is a little overpriced. Nonetheless, it was fantastic, so I'm torn. Whilst I love the food, I think there is better value for money out there - cough cough... Chamber 36.

That said, this is a true, authentic Asian food experience, and you gotta love that.

The restaurant has to be one of the prettiest in Liverpool. Lit like a Christmas tree, it beckons you like a moth to a flame. You cannot and should not resist.

Then, there is the extra entertainment of having swings for seats at some of the tables. It's genius.

Ultimately, as any good restaurant can do, it relies on its exceptionally tasty food, and it has that in abundance. Every mouthful is an explosion of flavour, texture and heat, as any good Indian street food should.

It took me straight back to my trip around India.

The best things to do in Liverpool - Mowglis Street Food
Has to be one of the prettiest restaurants in Liverpool.

Baraco

The best things to do in Liverpool - A taste of Italy at Baraco
A taste of Italy.
  • What: An Italian tapas and small plate sensation. (Veggie and vegan options)
  • Where: On Castle Street, between Liverpool Town Hall and the Queen Victoria Memorial. (map)
  • How much: A garlic bread, fries, two pizzas, two mains and two beers cost us £65.89 - Absolute bargain. (menu)

First things first. This is up there with some of the best food I've had in Liverpool, and that's saying something.

As with many of my suggestions, you should book first, as these guys were turning away the crowds. It's a popular place.

This cool and unique take on the Spanish tapas dishes, but for Italian food, is something the world needs and I discovered way too late.

Every mouthwatering bite took me back to my Italian trips. It's clear the chefs have Italian roots and or have spent a lot of time around Italians. We tried numerous dishes, and each one had that home-cooked-by-grandma vibe. This alone is a reason to visit the city and one of the best things to do in Liverpool.

The best things to do in Liverpool - A taste of Italy at Baraco
Stylish and delicious!

Sanskruti

The best things to do in Liverpool - Sanskruti
Again, a delcious taste of India.
  • What: A homely vegetarian and vegan Indian restaurant
  • Where: Hidden on a back street just northwest of Moorfields Station. (map)
  • How much: We had two pints, popadoms, a starter and a main each, and shared rice and roti for under £60. (menu)

As a meat-eater, you could have fooled me into thinking there was meat in these dishes. Every dish I've had here has been creamy, succulent and popping with flavour.

Each dish is a traditional meal from the host's recipes, with no gimmicks or add-ons, just pure, raw, authentic Indian.

Their website sums up their food perfectly, saying: "Our meals are prepared with the belief that Indian food is not only about heat but also about the perfect marriage of aromatic herbs and spices".

They got every aspect of each dish spot on.

Whilst the food, service, and, frankly, everything was spot on, I am a little surprised they have been named in the top fifty best vegan restaurants in the world by the Big Seven travel website.

But then again, I couldn't name you any better. Get down here and try it out for yourself. See what you think.

Where to Party in Liverpool

Welcome to the Mecca of nightlife.

Truthfully, one of the best things to do in Liverpool is hit the bars and clubs and see where the night takes you, even more so if you're only here for a long weekend.

Not many cities in the UK can rival Liverpool for nightlife. No matter what sort of night out you're after, you will find it here.

  • Chilled and relaxed evening, supping on a cocktail - tick
  • Desperate to drink the blues away, sinking pint after pint - tick
  • Dance until your feet, back and at my age, everything else hurts - tick.

You are in for a treat.

Similarly, no matter where you are in the city or what time of day, you'll find somewhere to drink. That said, the hub of nightlife has to be Seel Street. Every other building is lit up and is either a bar, club or restaurant/bar.

Alternatively, you have Matthew Street, home of the Cavern Club and other live music venues. I won't dive into this one again. I have already mentioned the Cavern Club above in the 'best things to do in Liverpool' section.

Below, I have tried to give a few options across the city. Likewise, I have thrown some curveballs, should you wish to accept the mission.

And, as with the food section above, I have split them into four pubs and three cocktail bars.

Pubs

The Vines

The best things to do in Liverpool - Beers at Vines
I needed this one.
  • What: An old-style pub that wouldn't look out of place at a country shooting mansion.
  • Where: Down the road from Lime Street station. (map)

Recently renovated in early 2023, this delightful corner pub would perfectly suit a shooting club in a country manor house.

Numerous stuffed animals glare at you from all angles... and the more you look, the more you see.

Funny enough, there are several burrowing animals, which is quite apt, as this place is like a rabbit warren moving from room to room.

It's much bigger than you first think.

Complete with a small bar, log fires, leather sofas, a pool table, etched wooden walls, garnished ceilings and dim lighting, it is one place you won't forget in a hurry.

The best things to do in Liverpool - Grab a beer at Vines
Pretty cool looking building.

Handyman Pub

The best things to do in Liverpool - Drink at the Handyman Pub
What a place. You have to try a pint in here.
  • What: An old handyman's tool shop, saved by the community and converted into a Microbrewery.
  • Where: On Smithdown Road, not far from the Penny Lane Sign. (map)

When the old Handyman Supermarket closed its doors for the last time in September 2016, people didn't know what would happen to this landmark building.

Luckily, the local community bought it and decided to keep as much of the original building as possible.

Nothing has changed outside.

Equally, the inside has been left as natural, raw and rugged as possible. However, there's now a microbrewery on the mezzanine floor, which overlooks the bar.

Try some of the home-crafted beers and Gin. I can recommend the smoked barrel gin with berries.

Out the back, a large screen shows sporting events, films and other cultural flicks.

Love this place, and not just because one of the community members is my mate. I genuinely think it's a cracking place.

Community-owned, community vibes. What's better than that?

The best things to do in Liverpool - Drink at the Handyman Pub
Now that's a cool design.

The Bridewell

The best things to do in Liverpool - Drinks at The Bridewell
How cool is this?
  • What: A unique building that used to be a police station. Now, with cells and everything intact, it's a quality bar with a lovely courtyard.
  • Where: A five-minute walk from Royal Albert Dock and just down the road from John Lewis on Argyle Street. (map)

How often can you say you visited a city and ended up having a few beers in prison?

Here in The Bridewell, you can.

If there's room, grab a seat in the cell and let the drinks roll. Even if there isn't room in the popular cells, The Bridewell has a lot of seating in the bar area or a beautifully renovated courtyard.

With quality craft beers, ciders, gins, and more, this old police station is about as unique as it comes for a pint.

The best things to do in Liverpool - Drinks at The Bridewell
Must have been a great police station.

The Botanist (Previously Smugglers Cove)

The best things to do in Liverpool - Drinks at the Botanist
Cheecky G&T at one of our favourite bars in Liverpool.
  • What: Well, I referred to it as the officer's mess aboard Captain Barbosa's ship. I love it.
  • Where: On the Royal Albert Dock near the Beatles Story. (map)

Serving up some hearty foods to warm any sailor's shivering bones, Smugglers Cove (sorry, I will still call it that as it sounds better and fits the vibe more) is more than just a bar. If you're in the Royal Albert Dock area and feeling ravenous, pop in and order one of their famous hanging kebabs. Thank me in the comments at the bottom of the page.

If it's just a drink you're after, welcome to what can only be described as a pirate hangout.

With all things nautical, Jack Sparrow and Barbosa would be proud of this place, and it's one I loved. Since the Botanist took over, there have been small changes with flowers dangling from every rope shelf or ceiling hook.

Cocktails, beers, whisky, rum, and other spirits come out to play in Smugglers, so sit back, relax and try not to end up legless. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

The best things to do in Liverpool - Drinks at the Botanist
mmmmmm Leafy!

Classy Cocktail Bars

Ex-Directory

The best things to do in Liverpool - Ex-directory
This place is insane. Check out that phone box cocktail
  • What: Funky, fun and stylish speakeasy.
  • Where: Enter through a phone box, hidden down a little alley off Dale Street, near the Ibis Styles. (map)

Once you've found the phone box and given the friendly team a ring, you'll enter a cosy, stylish bar that makes you feel like part of a secret club.

The chilled and fun vibes reverberate around the dark and colourful room with cosy seating, imaginative images strewen across the walls, and bonsai trees everywhere. It's as if you've walked into a tropical paradise.

This imaginative world continues onto the cocktails, as each comes in a weird, wacky, and wonderful container. The phone box, a Sunny D bag, a bathtub, a milk bottle and many more are waiting for you to throw a straw in and sip away to your heart's content.

This place is mint, and I'm sure you'll love it. Let me know what you think by DM'ing me on Instagram or leaving a comment below.

Vibes are on point.

Hummingbird

The best things to do in Liverpool - Hummingbird
Oh yes. Two more please.
  • What: A large, stylish and elegant cocktail bar.
  • Where: Just around the corner from the Cavern Club. (map)

There isn't much to say about this one.

You don't enter through a phone box or have a choice of which prison cell you sit in. It's just a darn right classic cocktail bar.

No faff, no facard, just elegant and somewhere to relax away from noise and madness.

Again, this is my opinion, but I think it has the best cocktails in Liverpool... Whisky fans, try the Geisha.

All in all, it's somewhere you'd go on a first date if you wanted to impress. And it would work!

The best things to do in Liverpool - Hummingbird
Classy little place this.

Berry and Rye

The best things to do in Liverpool - Berry and Rye
Keep them coming.
  • What: A small, dark, secret club with an epic sound of live music.
  • Where: On the edge of Chinatown and opposite Chamber 36. (map)

And back to the madness we go.

You could easily walk past and think the bar was being renovated, closed down or just not there at all.

However, if you knock on the door, in time, out of the darkness, a figure waves you into the dulcet tones of a perfectly played piano. Now, in 2026, located by the door to draw you in...

After taking your seat in the darkness, you're handed a book, a thrilling story, if you will. Don't worry about the beginning or the end, it's the middle you'll want.

Why?

It's where you'll find the cocktail menu. But, I ain't your mother, so if you want to read it all, crack on.

Throughout the night, the talented musician plays until their fingers give out, the staff supply you with immense cocktails, and the evening meanders off into the early hours.

It's magical, and somewhere you cannot miss when you visit the best things to do in Liverpool.

Is Liverpool Safe to Visit?

As always, I like to end the blog with a brief safety note.

So here goes.

Natural disasters

Liverpool, like the rest of the UK, doesn't tend to suffer catastrophic outbreaks of crazy weather. Neither does it suffer from natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, or deadly tsunamis.

So none of that should put you off visiting Liverpool.

Drunkenness

A trip to Liverpool is as safe as going to bed at night. In truth, the most trouble you'll get into is probably due to too much booze.

Getting drunk around water is never a great idea, so be careful, especially across the slippery cobbles of Albert Dock and at the edge of the River Mersey.

Crime

Within the UK, Liverpool has a reputation for high levels of crime, such as drugs, theft, shootings and stabbings. All of which happens here.

However, most of these incidents happen outside of any area you're likely to visit or accidentally roam into. Plus, they tend to be gang-related

If you stick to the city centre or the tourist hotspots, you shouldn't come across any issues.

As always, if you're wearing expensive jewellery or leave your purse or wallet unattended in busy shopping areas, you are leaving yourself open to crime. Likewise, in busy shopping centres, keep an eye out for pickpockets. They work in the crowds.

Nevertheless, crime shouldn't be a factor in whether you explore all the best things to do in Liverpool. That is, unless you're here to take over another gang's patch.

The knife angel
The Knife Angel -Made of 100,000 confiscated knives. I snapped this in Liverpool, btu it moves moves around the country. Sad hey?
