Uncover the Snow-Capped Alps of Innsbruck, Austria

The sublime white peaks of the Alps stretch for around seven-hundred and fifty miles through Europe.

Deep in the valleys of the Austrian Alps is the quaint, peaceful ski city of Innsbruck.

Innsbruck, Austria, lies five-hundred and seventy-four meters above sea level and is surrounded as far as the eye can see by towering snowy mountains.

Famed for its Olympic ski jump and numerous ski resorts, Innsbruck is one of the ski capitals of Europe. However, there is far more to this picturesque city than skiing.

In this travel guide to Innsbruck, Austria, I will explore all the best things to do, analyse where to eat and drink and, of course, where to stay.

Trust me, for a small city, Innsbruck has plenty to keep you occupied with or without your skis or boards in hand.

All this and more from my latest trip to Innsbruck in February 2025.

Shame it was a tad cloudy, but still...It was beautiful

What's Innsbruck, Austria Like?

Innsbruck, Austria, is a small city hidden by the soaring Austrian Alps.

Blink, and you'll miss it.

Within the flat valley plains, Innsbruck is quiet, with almost no traffic. The peaceful sounds of birds chirping and the raging torrent of the turquoise River Inn are heard, only broken by the occasional low-flying jet engine above as people land or take off from Innsbruck Airport.

The old town is a relaxing, colourful, almost Christmas-like toy town, with age-old architecture and splashes of bright oranges, blues and golds.

It's fashionable, attractive and inviting.

Likewise, it's clean and tidy, and the air feels so refreshing it's almost medicinal.

The main pedestrianised streets house numerous bars and restaurants under the watchful gaze of eye-catching statues. Tables and chairs fill the otherwise empty streets with people sitting, smiling and grasping a cold beer or a glass of red.

Nevertheless, it's the surrounding mountain backdrop that dominates the old city.

Whether you ski or not, this is somewhere you don't want to miss.

How to Get To Innsbruck

Ok, here's the good news.

Despite being a small city in the middle of nowhere, Innsbruck, Austria, is easy to get to.

Whether you fly in, train in or get the bus/coach, you will be close to all the best things to do in Innsbruck.

How to get to Innsbruck from Innsbruck Airport (Flughafen)

Most of you will likely be flying into Innsbruck via Innsbruck Airport. Which, by the way, is tiny. You won't be in there long at all.

Once out, you have the usual options of bus or taxi.

Taxis are everywhere and will drop you to your door in Innsbruck in around fifteen minutes.

If you opt for the bus, you'll need Bus F to Innsbruck.

From Monday to Friday, Bus F starts at 5:40am and then comes at 6am, 6:20am, and every fifteen minutes thereafter until 7:20pm, when it reverts to every twenty minutes until the last journey of the day at 11:10pm.

On Saturdays, the bus leaves every twenty minutes, from 5:40am. On Sundays, Bus F leaves every half an hour from 05:40am until 11:10pm.

You can get a ticket and the bus just outside the door for €3 (£2.54). Bus F stops numerous times throughout the city, including at Innsbruck (HBH) Train Station, which takes around twenty minutes. If you have the free Innsbruck Welcome Card or have bought an Innsbruck Card, the bus is free. I'll talk more about this later.

How to get to Innsbruck from Innsbruck Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)

Arriving at Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof means you're already in the city centre. Everything is walkable from here. If you are trying to get to the pedestrianised streets where the bars, restaurants and shops are, you're looking at less than a ten-minute walk.

Likewise, all the buses stop directly outside the central station. Connecting from the trains or airport bus to anywhere in or around the city is extremely simple.

How to get from Innsbruck Bus and Coach Station to Innsbruck

Like the other two options, arriving in Innsbruck via a bus or coach means you're already in the heart of the action.

All the buses arrive in Innsbruck at Innsbruck Central Train Station. FlixBus arrives in Innsbruck, two minutes south of the Central Station. Frankly, it's so close it's essentially the train station.

From here, you can connect to any train in and out of the city and all of the city's buses, including Bus F (the airport bus).

Again, the main shopping street with many of the bars and restaurants is less than a ten-minute walk.

Timing your Trip

How Long Should You Spend Visiting Innsbruck, Austria?

The answer to this depends on one thing. Are you here to ski/snowboard or just see Innsbruck?

If you're here to ski or snowboard, you might want a week here. However, if you, like me, cannot ski and think you'd break your legs, arms and neck, then four nights will suffice.

That way, you can explore all the best things to do in Innsbruck and take a day trip to another beautiful town in either Austria or Italy.

Also, if you visit Innsbruck for two or more nights, you will get benefits such as free transportation with the Innsbruck Welcome Card.

The Best Time Of The Year to visit Innsbruck, Austria

Again, if you are here to ski, you'll want that fresh winter snow, whereas if you're here to see Innsbruck, it has to be the summer.

Hence, I'd say skiers and winter sports lovers should visit Innsbruck between November and March.

Those looking to explore in the sun and blue skies should visit Innsbruck between June and September.

Where to Stay Whilst Visiting Innsbruck

If you want to visit Innsbruck, Austria but are particular about the type of accommodation you stay in, you're in luck.

There's an abundance of accommodation in Innsbruck, ranging from cheap and cheerful hostels to five-star hotels and everything in between.

Honestly, it's a case of you know what you like.

The only advice I'll give about accommodation in Innsbruck is to choose the right location.

If you're here to ski, you need to book somewhere with easy access to the mountains and snow. Otherwise, you'll be carrying your skies a long way each day and possibly paying over the odds for journeys up and down the mountains.

Likewise, if you're here to visit Innsbruck and not the snowy mountains, you'll want to stay in and around the old town. This ranges from the River across to Innsbruck Central Station and Innsbrucker Hofgarten down to Bowlerspoint.

Staying within this location means everything is easily accessible on foot.

The only other point I'll mention about Innsbruck is if you stay for two nights, you'll get benefits from the city called an Innsbruck Welcome Card. This includes free transportation and discounted activities.

Yet, if you stay three nights, those benefits increase. It's worth staying for three nights to make the most of these free benefits.

Urban Inn

The Urban Inn - The perfect place to stay when you visit Innsbruck, Austria
Everything you need for your visit to Innsbruck, Austria.
  • What: A small block of cosy and bijou apartments.
  • Where: Five minutes walk from the central train station and five minutes walk south of the beautiful Triumphpforte. (map)
  • Why: It's great value for money, cosy, warm, has everything you need and is well located.
  • Why Not: The beds are low, so if you have issues getting up, it could be tricky. Or, you might prefer a fancy hotel.

Whilst small, the Urban Inn, Innsbruck has everything you need to make your visit easy and enjoyable.

Everything from check-in to check-out went smoothly.

My favourite memory of the Urban Inn was sitting every morning in the window seat, looking out at the mountains with a cup of tea. I also loved the little touches the Urban Inn family provided, including the little drawings and welcome notes.

Despite the bed being so low, it was comfortable, and the whole room felt cosy and warm. I thought it was fantastically decorated, and the whole place felt clean and crisp.

Furthermore, the shower was beautifully powerful, yet the water felt soft, it was fantastic.

In February 2025, I paid €454.16 (£378.22) for four nights for two people.

Further Accommodation

Obviously, I've only stayed in one location in Innsbruck and loved it.

Nevertheless, I get it; my choice isn't for everyone, as we all have different needs and requirements.

Hence, below is a link to three accommodation sites I use when looking for places to stay.

All three throw out great options with differing prices and standards within Innsbruck.

If you're visiting Innsbruck on a budget, then Hostelworld is the best place to look. Yet, if you're looking for comfort and privacy over budget, then check out Booking.com and Airbnb.

Best Things to do in Innsbruck, Austria

A lot of people only talk about skiing and snowboarding in Innsbruck.

However, there are loads of things to do in Innsbruck that don't involve clipping your feet into something and throwing yourself down the mountain.

I spent four nights here running around the city doing everything I could (other than skiing) and ran out of time. Bearing in mind how small Innsbruck is, that should show you how much there is to do.

Nevertheless, before I dive into my list of the best things to do in Innsbruck, I want to talk to you about some money savers.

Firstly, as I've alluded, everyone who books two nights' accommodation in Innsbruck will receive a free Innsbruck Welcome Card. This card allows free travel in the Innsbruck area and discounted tickets to guided tours and other highlights such as ice skating and swimming. Three nights or more means even more discounts.

For a full list check out the website.

    However, there's more.

If you purchase an Innsbruck Card, which I highly recommend, you'll get free travel and free entry and access to most of Innsbruck's highlights and discounts on other activities.

    You can buy a twenty-four hours card for €59 (£49.11), a forty-eight hours card for €69 (£57.44) or a seventy-two hours card for €79 (£65.76).

Basically, if you want to go to the Top of Innsbruck and visit Swarovski Crystal World, you'll get your money back. Everything after that is money gained.

With that said, here is my list of the best things to do in Innsbruck that don't involve skiing or snowboarding.

    Discovering Innsbruck, Austria: The Highlights

Ride the cable cars to the Top of Innsbruck

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and go to the Top of Innsbruck
    At the top top.
    • Why: The views from the top are fantastic.
    • Where: Between the River Inn and Innsbrucker Hofgarten. (map)
    • How long: Half a day for the trip up, a bit of time at the top and then back to Innsbruck.
    • How much: A lofty €52 (£43.17) for the three rides to the top. (Innsbruck Card Holders - Free)

Firstly, I'll address the elephant in the room.

The price to get to the Top of Innsbruck is too high. However, with an Innsbruck Card, this is one of the best things to do in Innsbruck.

Starting at the bottom, you join the speedy Hungerburgbahn and catapult underground before climbing the mountain. You stop at several stations, including Innsbruck Alpine Zoo.

Disembarking from the rollercoaster-esque train, you move to the slower, larger glass cable cars that gently lift you from the green hillsides to the snowy peaks. It's here the views start to impress. Once out, you join the fast-paced world of skiing and snowboarding as you crunch the snow beneath your foot.

There's more. Despite spectacular views, beer and food, you can go further, where the snow thickens, and life becomes more 'on edge'. Take the final cable car to the Top of Innsbruck and enjoy 360-degree views of Innsbruck deep in the valley and the surrounding snow-drenched mountains.

    Top of Innsbruck

Once at the top, you can also get a snack and a cold beer or trek to the peak with mountains as far as the eye can see to the left or Innsbruck below to the right. Either way, the views are phenomenal.

Back down a level, the views remain over Innsbruck and beyond, but now, you're met with winter sports enthusiasts, a top restaurant and more cold beer. I highly recommend sitting outside (however cold you are) at the tables and grabbing a bite to eat at Restaurant Seegrube.

Views 10, food 9, beer 10. Those figures don't come along too often.

Visit Innsbruck and take the transport to the Top of Innsbruck
Journey one of three done on the way to the Top of Innsbruck

Be dazzled by the sparkling Swarovski Crystal World

Visit Innsbruck, Austria - Trip to Swarovski World
    Now that's an entrance.
    • Why: You're taken on an impressive and glamorous journey through the expensive world of Swarovski.
    • Where: A short fifteen-to twenty minutes drive east of Innsbruck in Wattens. (map)
    • How long: Including travelling time, I'd suggest around two and a half hours.
    • How much: A remarkably reasonable €24 (£19.92) per person. (Innsbruck Card Holders - Free)

I hadn't planned to visit Swarovski Kristallwelten as Diamonds aren't really my thing. Nevertheless, as Burg Hasegg was closed, we thought, why not? Surprisingly, the world of Swarovski turned out to be a highlight for us.

The shuttle bus picks you up at Innsbruck HBH (free of charge), and within fifteen minutes, you're there.

Upon entering the amazing face mound, you're led through a dark world of stunning crystals glistening in every direction.

They take you on a journey through different worlds, including a cold and enchanting Christmas scene, a musical room, rooms of illusions and numerous other interactive areas.

The experience was well put together, and there was always something to catch your eye or make you smile.

Yes, it's all about the diamonds, but it felt magical, surreal, comforting and warming, almost like a child waking up on Christmas morning.

Admittedly, it ends in the shop, where the magic disappears with your wallet, but overall, we were shocked at how much we enjoyed Swarovski's Crystal World.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria - Trip to Swarovski World
    The magic of crystals

Enjoy an evening at Tiroler Abende with the Gundolf family

Visit Innsbruck, Austria, with traditon and great food with the Gundolf Family
    Tonight's entertainment.
    • Why: It's local tradition at its best, and with great food and laughter
    • Where: Just down the road from the Innsbruck Messe train station. (map)
    • How long: The show is every Wednesday between 8:30pm and 10pm.
    • How much: The show costs €39 (£32.38), but a combined meal and show costs €66 (£54.79). (Innsbruck Card Holders - 25% off)

Another top Innsbruck attraction with non-stop laughter and joy.

When you book, you have three options.

    • Firstly, book the show.
    • Secondly, book a meal beforehand and then the show.
    • Thirdly, book a meal and show at the same time.

All three options come with a beer. We opted for the show and meal together, and I'm glad we did.

Upon arrival, you'll be seated in the small auditorium by people dressed in traditional clothing and given a beer. Once the show starts, prepare yourself for dance, music, comedy, song and even a blast of fire.

We walked away at the end of the night, stunned into amazement. Our faces hurt from smiling and laughing so much.

Finally, I have to add that the three-course traditional meal was superb. It had plenty of flavour and tasted delicious.

Make this one of the things you do when you visit Innsbruck, Austria.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria, with traditon and great food with the Gundolf Family
    Smack that!

Visit the enchanting Court Church, Innsbruck

Visit Innsbruck, Austria - Court Church
The tomb of Maximilian I, The Holy Roman Emperor
    • Why: There's a beautiful courtyard and astonishing statues guarding the tomb of Maximillian I (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire).
    • Where: Next to Hofburg Innsbruck. (map)
    • How long: Around thirty to forty minutes.
    • How much: Entry to the courtyard and the church is €9 (£7.47). (Innsbruck Card Holders - Free)

Firstly, you can combine this visit with the church museum. However, the church is the highlight.

Entering through a massive wooden door, you'll visit the romantic little courtyard with a striking statue and central water feature.

The arched walkways are fantastically finished, and whilst small, it is a truly beautiful place to be.

Nevertheless, the church is another level of wow.

The insanely crafted stunning statues are a sight to behold as they stand on guard, overwatching the tomb of Maximilian I, the Holy Roman Emperor. Which, like the statues, is craftsmanship at its best.

The detail and design are something I've never seen in this way, and it blew me away with how elegant it was.

Usually, the style and design of the rest of the church would be enough to win me over; it is enchanting. However, it paled into insignificance compared to the tomb and ring of statues that guard it.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria - Court Church
    Cute little courtyard!

Discover the history at Schloss Ambras

Visit Innsbruck, Austria at Schloss Ambras
Uncastle like, but I like it.
    • Why: Peacocks roam, and you'll discover many historic items. Not to mention it's a beautiful castle and gardens.
    • Where: A short bus ride south of Innsbruck near Aldrans. (map)
    • How long: A couple of hours will be about right. However, if it's a nice hot day, you could enjoy a picnic in the garden.
    • How much: Entrance to the grounds, the castle and the armoury is €14 (£11.61). (Innsbruck Card Holders - Free)

The large gardens are almost like a well-kept park with wildlife everywhere, and peacocks roam near the castle.

Inside, you'll visit the impressive armoury with weapons and armour strewen throughout. From there, you're led into the exhibits from yesteryear, which dazzle and delight.

Keep an eye out for a carved skeletal figure brandishing weapons handcrafted from a single piece of wood. Impressive doesn't cover it. It's sensations.

Once you've explored the breathtaking gardens, you'll enter the castle and discover the majesty and grandeur of the building and what life was like for those who have lived and partied within.

The whole castle and grounds were impressive, and I think it was well worth the entry price - even better if you have an Innsbruck Card.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria at Schloss Ambras
Not sure my dining table would fit in here.

Check out the daredevil work of ski jumping at Bergisel Ski Jump

Visit Innsbruck, Austria at the Bergisel Ski Jump
Um, yeah, that's a hard no from me.
    • Why: Great views and a new appreciation for how high and darn-right scary that jump is.
    • Where: In the south of Innsbruck near Tirol Panorama and Stift Wilten. (map)
    • How long: Unless you stop for a beer or food at the top, you'll be done within the hour.
    • How much: A bit steep for me, but €11 (£9.12) per person. (Innsbruck Card Holders - Free)

Ok, so there's not a lot to say about this one. When it comes down to it, it's a ski jump.

Truthfully, Bergisel Ski Jump doesn't look like it's been revamped since it held the 1964 Winter Olympics. I think it's time for a bit of renovation.

Nonetheless, I'm urging you to visit because unless you've been to a ski jump before, you'll never know how crazily big they are. You'll gain a new perspective on the sport.

Standing up close, you'll understand the sheer kahooners it takes to throw yourself down the ramp and leap into the air. Honestly, it doesn't look possible.

As mentioned, the spectator area is aged. The seats are rings of gravel and concrete, which cannot be comfortable.

Yet, the brief funicular railway to the top is fun, and the bar and restaurant are well worth a drink, even if there's no competition. The views are fantastic.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria at the Bergisel Ski Jump
That's right, the Winter Olympics were right here in 1964.

Climb to the top of Stadtturm with rooftop views

Visit Innsbruck, Austria with rooftop views from the Stadtturm
    Golden Roof from above.
    • Why: You'll get nice views of central Innsbruck.
    • Where: Back in the main streets of Innsbruck, near the Golden Roof. (map)
    • How long: Half an hour is more than enough.
    • How much: About the right price at €4.50 (£3.73). (Innsbruck Card Holders - Free)

My final in-city item on the best things to do in Innsbruck list is to climb the one hundred and thirty-three steps to the observation platform.

The tight spiral staircases entwine to create a piece of art in their own right. However, the views from the top over the central pedestrianised streets of Innsbruck are the key reason to keep climbing.

Direct views over the Golden Roof and the colourful streets are beautiful.

In truth, it's not the best thing on my list, but it is worth doing as you pass by and have the Innsbruck Card in your back pocket.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and climb the 132 stairs of Stadtturm
    Only 133 to go.

Where to Eat in Innsbruck, Austria

After a day of skiing on the snowy slopes or strolling the cold mountain paths, there is one thing you will need more than anything: warm, hearty and wholesome food!

Luckily, Innsbruck and the region of Tyrol are famed for it.

With a mix of German meaty dishes and chips and Italian pasta and pizza, I guarantee you you will not go hungry.

Alongside the Italian and German influences, Austria has a few dishes and desserts in its back pocket.

Here are a few you should try during your visit to Innsbruck.

    • Kaiserschmarrn: A thin, sweet pancake-style dessert with cranberries or apple sauce.
    • Apfelstrudel: Apple strudel is a long, thin, baked pastry filled with apples and covered in sweetness.
    • Kiachl: A flatter, smaller doughnut served with a sweet topping - usually cranberries.
    • Schnitzel: Wafer-thin slab of breaded fried meat, often served with chips.
    • Kaspressknödel: A small fried cheese dumplings. Other styles of dumplings are also popular.

Whether they take your fancy or not, you will find many other classic world foods, including the old-faithful burgers.

If you're vegan or veggie, life in Innsbruck can be a little more tricky, but most restaurants have at least one option. If not, they are good and will try to rustle something up.

In my favourite places to eat in Innsbruck, I've included two brunch places, a world-beating burger bar, a local schnitzel haunt, a mountainside restaurant with a view and a fantastic restaurant for your last night in Innsbruck.

    Summit and Friends

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and enjoy avo on toast at Summit & Friends
Absolutely beautiful - Cheers Marco and Leo
    • What: A small but super-friendly brunch cafe with chilled vibes. (Veggie and vegan options)
    • Where: Just off of Eduard-Wallnöfer-Platz. (map)
    • How much: Two breakfasts and two freshly squeezed juices cost €35 (£29.28).

Marco and Leo are two cool guys with a hipster vibe who have set up a brunch heaven in the heart of Innsbruck. It was so good that we went two days running.

Along with the guys the decor is superb and gives the cafe its charm and charisma. I especially like the chalkboard with little comments on it. If you visit, you'll know what I mean.

Regarding the food, every dish was made to order, full of flavour with the freshest of ingredients and incredible tastes. Even the freshly squeezed juices were exactly that: fresh.

I'd one hundred per cent recommend the avo on toast, but every dish on the other tables looked just as mouthwatering, especially the poached egg.

What a find this was. This is the best brunch place in town and somewhere you must try when you visit Innsbruck, Austria.

Visit Innsbruck and eat at Summit & Friends
    Warm and welcoming.

    Breakfast Club

Breakfast in Innsbruck at The Breakfast Club
A stylish traditonal way to enjoy breakfast
    • What: Stylish and green Breakfast hangout. (Veggie and vegan options)
    • Where: Around the corner from Summit & Friends on Eduard-Wallnöfer-Platz. (map)
    • How much: Two breakfasts and two beers cost €40 (£33.71). (menu)

My second favourite brunch place in Innsbruck, and one that was buzzing every morning.

It felt like a student hangout before and between lessons.

With a vast and attractive-looking menu, it truly is a difficult choice.

Every continental-style breakfast came with a little basket of fresh bread and was well-presented.

Again, the ingredients were fresh, made to order and served with a magical smile. Everything was well-presented, tasty and for us, with a beer.

Likewise, the style and decor worked well. I cannot fault this place at all, I just felt Summit & Friends was more filling and full-bodied.

Visit Innsbruck and enjoy brunch at the breakfast Club
This place will be buzzing in the summer.

    Ludwig

Visit Innsbruck and enjoy the best ever burger and chips at Ludwig
    Simply the best!
    • What: The most insanely good burger joint ever. (Veggie and vegan options)
    • Where: Directly behind the Court Church Innsbruck. (map)
    • How much: Two burgers, two sides of fries and a couple of beers cost €66 (£55.18). (menu)

I've had my fair share of burgers and fries, and normally, a burger joint wouldn't make it on one of my 'best places to eat' lists.

Nevertheless, these were on a different level and deserve their place here.

With a good-sized portion of chips and a hearty burger, you will not be left hungry. However, the magical, sizzling flavours of the fries and the ingredients in the burger left my lips wanting more and more.

Likewise, the ketchup and sauces were homemade and had additional flavouring sprinkled throughout.

They've taken the classic burger and fries and put a local twist to it, making this one of my favourite burger places ever.

The setting was simple but stylish and the staff were funny, there when you needed them and everything was served with a smile.

I don't know how they make such amazing burgers and fries, but I desperately want to know. Guys, call me...

Visit Innsbruck and enjoy the best ever burger and chips at Ludwig
There's the chippys. Oh I crave for you...

    FRANZS Bier

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and enjoy the local meal - Schnitzel
It doesn't get much more local than this.
    • What: A traditional Austrian restaurant. (Veggie and limited vegan options)
    • Where: Next to the Golden Roof. (map)
    • How much: Two mains and four beers cost €50 (£42). (menu)

First impressions from the outside are it was welcoming and friendly and great for a summer beer watching the world go by during the day.

Inside the restaurant was basic, with wooden seats and tables which dominated the room. The rest looked like an old factory converted into a restaurant. I wouldn't call it pretty or stylish though. Simple and clean are two words that spring to mind.

However, our waitress was friendly, enthusiastic and helpful.

When I'm away, and cannot decide what to have, I always ask the waitress or waiter "What would you have?".

Our waitress replied, "Well we are famous for our schnitzels". And the rest is history.

I ordered the pork schnitzel. Upon first seeing my meal, I thought it, like the restaurant, was basic but fairly large. Luckily, it's clear that the food does the talking here and it was delicious.

In truth, it will never be award-winning, but it was very nice. The sort of place you'd eat with mates as a 'go-to' kind of place. Tasty food and great service.

Visit Innsbruck and get great food at FRANZS Bier + Bar + Beisl
Why am I always last to leave?

    Restaurant Seegrube

Visit Innsbruck and eat in the mountains
Yeah, I could have stayed here all day!. Fantastic...
    • What: Mountainside Restaurant with views. (Veggie and vegan options)
    • Where: In the mountains on the way up to the Top of Innsbruck. (map)
    • How much: Two mains and two beers cost €50 (£42). (menu)

Admittedly, this is not somewhere you think about coming last minute. It takes a bit of planning. However, it's worth it.

With ice-cold beers and those views, it doesn't really matter what the food is like. You'd still love it.

Nevertheless, the chefs clearly don't rest on their laurels, serving up some incredibly tasting large dishes.

The schnitzel was just as good, if not better than above at FRANZS Bier and Bar. Likewise, the fries were delicious and the pumpkin soup smelt delightful and I'm told it tasted magnificent.

Everyone else around us seemed as impressed with their food too, which is always a good sign.

You come for the view and leave with a happy belly full of food. Just keep an eye out for any passing birds, they like to invite themselves to dinner. I can't blame them. If I was a bird, I'd be hanging around here.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and enjoy beers with a view.
    Pre-food beers, tick.

    Cool Run Inn

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and enjoy a meal at the amazing Cool Run Inns
Fresh and flavoursome. You can't beat it.
    • What: Classy Caribbean-infused restaurant with many fish dishes. (Veggie and vegan options)
    • Where: A couple of blocks east of Innsbruck's Westfriedhof. (map)
    • How much: Two mains and two beers cost €56 (£46.79). (menu)

While known for its seafood, to which there's plenty on the menu, we opted for a couple of other dishes, and our minds were blown away. Hands down, this is one of the best meals you'll find in Innsbruck.

I'd describe the food as a European twist on classic Caribbean dining.

Here, at Cool Run Inn, food is not something that just happens, it is something hand-crafted with love and with a presentation that's better than anything you've seen on Masterchef or in a Michelin-star restaurant.

This love of food and quest for perfection runs throughout the restaurant. From the first welcome to the last goodbye, the staff make you feel welcome and relaxed, managing to juggle a perfectly balanced atmosphere of sophistication and class without making you feel like you're out of your depth.

Everyone was so friendly and kind and our waitress, couldn't have done anything more for us. Every table got her time and happy personality. She worked the room fantastically.

Honestly, I cannot give high enough praise to Cool Run Inn. They provided us, without a doubt, one of the most magical meals I've had.

    Where to Party in Innsbruck

Despite being in the mountainous Alps, far from anything resembling a large city, it might be surprising to discover that Innsbruck has a fairly hectic nightlife.

How? And why? I hear you ask...

Well, Innsbruck has two universities, which means a lot of students. Likewise, there are a lot of holidaymakers skiing around who, as it appeared, seemed to enjoy a beer in the evening. They are probably thanking their god that they're alive after those slops.

    Anyway!

Innsbruck has an array of bars, from busy and exciting Irish bars to stylish cocktail bars and nightclubs to mountaintop bars with views to die for.

When you visit Innsbruck, you'll find the night to suit.

Finally, before I dive into my favourite bars in Innsbruck, I'll touch on nighttime safety.

Having walked around the city every evening, and into the early hours, I'd have to say it was completely safe. No gangs or groups were hanging around, and it felt as safe as walking around in the day.

    Blaue Brigitte

Visit Innsbruck, Asutria with a drink at Blaue Brigitte
    Style, grace and taste.
    • What: Dark, stylish and classy cocktail bar.
    • Where: A few doors down from Stadtturm and the Golden Roof. (map)

This was my favourite cocktail bar during my trip to Innsbruck.

From the time you're greeted by a welcoming golden statue in the entrance lobby to the moment you leave, you feel well looked after, cared for and made to feel special.

Exiting the lift you enter a world of pure class where every detail has been thought through. The set-up is sleek and fashionable and the uniforms were stylish with a hint of flare and vigour.

Whether you want a cosy corner or a sociable table Blaue Brigitte has you covered with their assortment of seating arrangements and styles.

The room was perfectly decorated and the cosy dark atmosphere added a certain level of mystery.

Similarly, the cocktails were full of flavour and packed a knockout punch. My god, they were strong.

You cannot beat this place for quality and atmosphere in Innsbruck.

    Keep em' coming

    Liquid Diary

Visit Innsbruck, Austria - cocktails at Liquid Diary
Light it up son, light it up.
    • What: Another very dark and stylish cocktail bar.
    • Where: On the corner of Adolf-Pichler Platz. (map)

How do I make this sound different to my write-up for Blaue Brigitte, when it was also classy, chic and dark?

The big difference and the reason it lost the top spot was because it was cash only, and in this day and age, that sucked. Going to the cash machine is a drag and a waste of time.

Other than that, Liquid Diary was a small, beautiful and atmospheric bar.

Again, the cocktails were phenomenal, tasty and strong.

The artwork is uplifting and clever as it draws you in and the more you look, the more animals you see appear from the leafy jungle backdrop.

Overall, I think it was the presentation that stood out to me, the bar staff were well dressed, professional and helpful, the bar looked great and even the cocktails had something to dazzle and make you smile. Liquid Diary reminded me of where the rich and famous drank in the 1930s before the show started at the theatre.

Fantastic drinks and I'm sure you'll have a great night with a few cocktails here. Just remember to bring CASH.

    Limerick Bills Irish Pub

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and a night at Limerick Bills
Here goes nothing. The night begins at Bills.
    • What: A lively spit and sawdust Irish Pub.
    • Where: On the main pedestrianised street, close to Annasäule. (map)

This is a must for any of you who visit Innsbruck, Austria.

    Expect the unexpected!

Walking in from the street under the arch through the tunnel-like entrance you never expect to discover a bar like this.

Entering through the door you feel like you've stepped through a portal into another world.

What awaits is a small bar that feels like you're back outside on a small cobbled street. Truthfully, it would fit in on Diagon Alley... I know... me and a Harry Potter reference. (Don't worry, that will be the first and last)

It looks rough and ready but is simply fantastic. In fact, it was so good we went two or three times.

Numerous rooms run off of other rooms like rabbit warrens and there's a brilliant walkway above the bar, which is great for people-watching, and the ambience is simply fantastic.

The music ranged from classic Irish songs to country and Indie music. This is one of the best bars in town. Only let down by accepting cash only.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and a night at Limerick Bills
    Great place to people watch.

    Wilten Brunch and Bar

Visit Innsbruck and enjoy a cocktail or G&T at Wilten Brunch&Bar
G&T and nibbles - tonight's gonna get messy
    • What: It is a pretty brunch place with a zest for cocktails. Brunch by day, cocktails by night.
    • Where: A couple of blocks south of the impressive Triumphpforte. (map)

No, I've not gone mad. Well, maybe, but I haven't.

I know this says brunch, and yes, they do do them, but the Wilten Brunch and Bar metamorphose like a butterfly from a brunch bar into a fun, friendly and lively bar.

All ages hang out here, from students to professors, and I like that.

With punchy art, trendy lighting and a fetching green floral display Wilten Brunch and Bar is a cool place to hang.

The cocktails are strong and come with nibbles, which, as a foodie, I think is simply the best.

The bar staff were fantastic and friendly and the atmosphere was lively but relaxing. If you find yourself in the area, grab a table, kick back, and enjoy some tasty drinks in one of the most relaxing bars in town.

Visit Innsbruck and enjoy a cocktail or G&T at Wilten Brunch&Bar
    Love the vibe.

    Plansch Bar

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and enjoy the bars - Plansch
Pre show drinks at the charming Plansch.
    • What: It is an elegant little bar with style and a great atmosphere.
    • Where: Within the arches under Innsbruck Messe Train Station. (map)

Slightly out of the centre of Innsbruck, but well worth a visit.

This small, arched bar under the train tracks thunders every time a train rolls overhead. But inside is where the real noise is made.

Glasses clink together, laughter and chatter buzz through the bar and the vibe was on point.

Whatever you fancy is waiting, from a cold beer to mixers and cocktails. Plansch has it all, including the character.

The rough and raw materials, the lighting and everything about the bar felt warm and friendly with plenty of panache and style.

The bar was filled to the brim with bottles and the guy behind the bar (didn't catch his name) worked tirelessly, but always made time for everyone.

    An epic little bar.

    Charming little place.

    Hard Rock Cafe

Visit Innsbruck and enjoy a few cocktails at Hard Rock
Hard Rock Cafe, Innsbruck smashing out the cocktails
    • What: It's Hard Rock -  A cafe/bar with a love of all things involving rock music.
    • Where: Again, it's on the main street, next to Annasäule. (map)

Hard Rock Cafe are a massive global brand, and I know they're like Marmite. Most people either love them or hate them.

Some people try to visit every single one, others avoid them.

Having been to a few, I've always found them indifferent. Some have been too much, whilst, in others, I haven't seen a 'hard' rock theme at all.

Here in the Hard Rock Cafe, Innsbruck, I would say it had a 'soft' hard rock vibe but with very well-priced and tasty cocktails, fantastic staff and a great vibe throughout.

Whilst I enjoyed the atmosphere and the drinks, it didn't fit the Innsbruck vibe. I thought it was an odd choice of location for a Hard Rock Cafe.

That said, if you're looking for a vibe and some music to beat too, I'd recommend it.

Visit Innsbruck and check out the Hard Rock Cafe
Not something I thought I'd see during my visit to Innsbruck.

    Ottoburg

Quiet first beer of the day in Innsbruck, Austria
    Day drinking always helps. Right?
    • What: A fancy restaurant with a relaxing outdoor drinking area, perfect for people-watching.
    • Where: Between the powerful River Inn and the Golden Roof. (map)

Yeah, I know this isn't a bar as such, it's a restaurant, but, when it's a nice hot day there is nowhere better to sit and relax outside and watch the world go by.

Cosy, laidback chairs and stylish tables make a cold beer even more relaxing. When you add that to a wonderful architectural backdrop across the street you could spend hours here.

Likewise, looking back at Ottoburg itself is captivating, with its exquisite antique-looking Austrian shutters against the plain rugged wall.

Then, there is the price, beers are very reasonably priced and always served with a smile.

We spent a lot of time here, and whilst the other bars on my list are great for the evening, I had to mention this place for those who enjoy a cheeky daytime session.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and check out Ottoburg.
    Love the shutters

Is it Safe to Visit Innsbruck, Austria?

    Visit Innsbruck, it's super safe.
    On the beat.

Normally, this is an easy yes or no answer.

However, here in Innsbruck, I need to consider several factors.

Firstly, if you plan to visit Innsbruck, Austria, to ski, snowboard or jump that massive Bergisel Ski Jump (you can't), then clearly no, Innsbruck is not going to be a safe place.

However, if you're here to enjoy my sport-free list of the best things to do in Innsbruck, then yes, Innsbruck is a safe place to explore.

    Winter Sports

Ultimately, as with any ski area, there are risks, and whilst I claim no knowledge of skiing, it looked more dangerous here than I had expected.

There were cliff edges at the bottom of the slopes with no barriers, people on ski doos with first aid and body bags, and I overheard at least three conversations which mentioned a 'bad accident' and "it didn't look good".

Likewise, walking on the snowy and icy mountain paths to the peaks, such as Hafelekarspitze, at the Top of Innsbruck, we found it too easy to slip and fall. In the right places, that would have been fatal.

Furthermore, whilst obvious barriers had been put in place, there is always the risk of avalanches and, of course, other out-of-control skiers.

In truth, if you're here to ski, you'll know the risks better than me. These sorts of risks are the same wherever you ski.

    Crime and wellbeing

You will see a lot of police, especially around the central pedestrianised streets of Innsbruck. Likewise, you'll see a lot of ambulances driving around the city, and I mean A LOT.

With both the police and ambulances everywhere, there was very little to worry about in Innsbruck.

Austria has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. In Innsbruck, those figures drop further, especially violent crimes. Similarly, if you were to have a heart attack or medical episode, this is the place to do it. You'll have an ambulance within minutes.

    Road Safety

Again, there is nothing to worry about on the roads. Innsbruck has very little traffic, and the city is geared to pedestrians.

The pavements are clear and smooth unless the snow has fallen and turned to ice. I'd suggest grippy walking shoes during the winter, but trainers should be fine in the summer.

Overall, it comes down to whether you're here to ski or to visit Innsbruck.

Visit Innsbruck, Austria and you'll see many ambulances
    What? Another one...
